This place introduced me to Chicken and Waffles–and I love it! The outside picture was taken on a very cold day just before Christmas, and you can see the holiday lighting reflected on the food picture. My wife and I like to vacation in Port Huron to watch freighters. The restaurant has quite a fascinating history, and this is one of the few franchises left. I also recommend the mushroom soup.

The chicken was amazing. But I also ordered a mushroom soup, which was also great, but for over $6 for a bowl of soup I felt it was very small. The fries looked gross but were amazing, I love their ranch!

After watching a story of this establishment on Under the Radar Michigan my wife and I and our friends went on a “mystery trip” to see if everything said about Chicken in the Rough was true.
We were not disappointed! You walk back in time with the decor and the music brought back many fond memories.
Now the food – Excellent, Delicious, plentyful! I ordered the 2 piece chicken combo, the seasoning on the chicken was finger licking good and the chicken was so moist and not a dry piece anywhere. I usually take pictures of my entire meal but this time I got carried away and ate half of my dinner before I realized it so the below picture is only half of the meal.
If you want a great meal look no further.

We were in town for a wedding and discovered this place on social media. By photo alone we knew we had to visit. was a Classic, fun, step back in time atmosphere as soon as you stepped inside. We were greeted and sat immediately, no wait. Lots of options on the menu that made it hard to decide what to order. My husband went w/ the chicken and waffles. Waffle had the perfect crisp on the outside, while being soft and pillowy in the inside making it a solid waffle. The chicken was out of this world! We both agreed it’s the best chicken we’ve had in a long time. The skin was fried golden brown and it was perfectly seasoned through out. I ordered the pulled pork Mac & cheese which was delicious. I had an amazing iteration of this dish a few yrs back and I’ve been chasing that flavor combo ever since and no place has ever come close. Palms nailed it! I could have used a bit more of the sauce to help balance the meat/sauce to macaroni & cheese ratio. But outside of that the noodles were done perfectly, cheese sauce was the perfect consistency and the pulled port was top notch. My husband and I ended up sharing both meals because we both loved them so much. I ended up leaving my leftovers in the hotel fridge and I was so upset. My only regret is not getting more chicken. 10/10 we both agreed we’d drive the 3.5 hrs back just to eat here again! The only note on service was our particular server was slow. She was friendly enough but it took 15 mins to get our check and then 10 mins after she took my card for her to come back. When she refilled our drinks they weren’t filled to the top and although she checked on us twice it was with other items in her hand and while she was mutlitasking. The other servers seemed to be a bit quicker and helped us with/ containers for our leftovers and answered a question we had on drinks from the bar. Overall the service was not bad, it just didn’t match the level of what the kitchen is putting out. Nothing that would discourage us from returning and we’ve told all the guests it’s a must try! Hoping to return one day because I cannot imagine never eating either of these meals again during my life.

We were in Port Huron for the scary Trolley tour and just happened to drive by this cute place that advertised “Chicken in the rough”, so we had to stop. The bar/diner is super cute and the decor took me back to the 1950’s. It is super clean and welcoming.
Our waitress was awesome we told her we were on a time crunch to make the tour so she immediately put in our chicken order. It is freshly made and takes 15-20 minutes to cook, but oh so worth it! We both 4 piece meals that came with 4 huge meaty, tender and delicious pieces of chicken, a roll, choice of potatoes and coleslaw. I am a big eater but after 2 pieces of the most tender and delicious chicken of my life I was stuffed.
Our waitress was delightful and efficient. She got us fed and out of there in plenty of time to make our tour. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Port Huron! Thanks for the great and service.

Wow! Best chicken tenders and waffle I’ve EVER had. The chicken is crunchy with a crispy flavor and breaded perfectly. My friend had the pulled pork sandwich and it was delicious! Both the service and the food was spot on! Definitely recommend. I dug in before I remembered to take a picture. The presentation was excellent.

We had to seek lodging someplace out of town have been back a couple of time a Year ever since for the chicken Discovered the bread pudding last weekend, out of this world ooops ate it before taking a pic.

Surprisingly good! Very cute diner! Looks a bit questionable from the outside but as soon as you step inside it’s a fun old timey diner atmosphere. The food was really good and our experience was an enjoyable end on our way home from a beach day trip.
