Went here while visiting from Illinois for a wedding. The gentleman that owns the restaurant is the same one that does all of the seating, waiting and bussing of tables. It has a perfect atmosphere that is just like home. The food was great and reasonably priced for how much you get. My fiancée and I went more than once the four days we were in De Smet. I would recommend anyone staying or passing through to stop in. We had both breakfast and lunch and the food was perfect both times.

Disappointment isn’t a strong enough word. Unfriendly, school lunch gross food, and falling apart atmosphere. Disgusting experience. I couldn’t even touch the ketchup bottle it was so gross looking, I used a napkin to squeeze the ketchup out. Fish sandwich was a cheep bun and frozen fish probably zapped in the microwave. Nothing on the bun, no lettuce, no mayo, made it so dry it wasn’t eatable. The french dip was the same way, dry to the point of choking it down even with Ajou. The french fries were even bad, tasteless. The mashed potatoes are out of a box. Even the cookies are made from a box, not homemade. The booths had huge cracks and tears, pealing paint on walls and just plain dirty feeling all around you. It was a waste of $35 and we’d never eat there again. It’s sad because I heard it used to be an incredible place, sought out by travelers and locals alike.

This was a fun diner/cafe! It felt a little
like we were stepping back in time. The service was good and the food was very good. The BEST peach pie I’ve had in soooo long! Loved the flaky crust! They make it fresh. Another customer told us they had been in business for forty years. I am pretty sure it was the owners that were working-taking orders, cooking, etc.
they didn’t have 1/2 and 1/2 for my coffee-just powdered creamer at the table, but he happily brought me milk when I asked.
We’d definitely stop here again!

One of those places that are few and far in between these days. I think lots of locals attend it was packed on one side it was more traditional with tables and chairs, the other side was more restaurant bar stools and bench seating. I was there around 12:30 1 in the afternoon there was only 1 waitress she was doing best she could but my wait time was a little longer than usual but she done a good job. I got a mushroom swiss burger was pretty decent my buddy got the cod dinner he had no complaints. There is enough room to park a big truck so truckers welcome. The place looks clean and decent kept.

Hidden fees they dont tell you about till its time to pay the bill. A good way to keep your servers from getting a tip.

Decor update would offer a better atmosphere. Many tourists probably visit. This restaurant can offer a more welcoming presence from those who live in the community. Smiling and saying “hello” costs nothing, but increases city revenue.

Stopped on a Sunday morning for breakfast. My ol’ man ordered the #3 Skillett special and I ordered biscuits and gravy with two eggs. Food was very good portions. Biscuits were very delicate and soft, gravy was tasty. The Skillett Special was two eggs, crispy hashbrowns, he had bacon and wheat toast. Service from our waitress was polite and she was attentive to check with us if we needed anything. There were two waitresses and looked like two cooks. The decor and atmosphere is dated and worn, but we were pleased with the food and service on a Sunday morning. Support Small businesses!

Waitress took forever to even drop off menus, then didn’t have a clue. Wanted breakfast as no where on the menu that stated that they server breakfast until a certain time. Ordered a mushroom, Swiss hamburger asked if it came with fries, she said “I think so?”, it didn’t but she never came and told us otherwise. Burger said it came with crispy onions. Received a Hamburger, Swiss cheese, canned mushrooms and grilled onions on a tiny plate. Will not be dinner here again.

The waitress was nice. The place was dated, seats torn. I ordered a roast beef sandwich — the quality fell short of an Arby’s. Wasn’t expensive though.
