Featured in many food lists, in National Geographic Traveler, in Gastronoms, and so many blogs… The Ouzerie of Lakis (you can read about all these accomplishments in the menu intro).

Kypseli, Petralona, Nikaia.. still hold strong in these small family businesses, built around sharing food with your parea (friends)… Small plates, amazing flavors, ouzo or tsipouro, and decor inspired by the menu.

In this spot, the love of the sea, the seafarer (naftoi), mermaids, boats, anchors, shells, are on full display… You can practically smell the sea, even though the Ouzerie is bam-smack in the middle of the city with cement all around.

Fresh seafood arrive daily from the waters around Athens (to view catch of the day, you can see the daily post on the Facebook page and Insta of the restaurant); There are also several vegetarian/ vegan options for people who do not eat fish (or have an allergy)

This Ouzerie of Lakis is a few steps away from Victoria station, and a great stop to recharge after a long walk, and day shopping.

A slice of athenian food history

Of course, the food mastermind behind this spot is called George… Lakis was his Dad.

George is a humble man, and I stopped to talk to him on leaving to say thank you for an amazing meal.

We ended up in deep discussion.

George’s dream is to continue to save the dying food art form of the Ouzerie in Athens. Ae I left the shop, he lamented, that these small eateries are slowly disappearing… In the ever changing foodscene of Athens, swallowed up by other fashions.

So how about we save them?

Visit them more often, and find a spot for them in our daily habbits.

Trends are great, however, preserving our food history is also vital.

After all, who are we as Greeks without our parea, arguing politics over snacks and flavors? We have been doing it for thousands of years.. so let’s toast to a few thousand more …

Wonderful, wonderful! The waiter recommended the perfect Ouzo for our meal – Psychis 38. I had the Laki’s salad which included rocket salad, fig, farmers cheese and lemon sorbet – a delicious surprise to my pallet. It was perfect with my friend sardines ( so light and delicious). I highly recommend this casual place.

Visiting Athens, then come here for authentic Greek fish dishes. Everything was fresh, favorable and tastes like your long lost Greek grandma cooked a meal just for you. Come hungry, eat well and drink well.

This place is a hidden gem we only found by recommendation from locals. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the owners are very hospitable and most important, the seafood is incredibly delicious. We had the lazerda, octopus, grilled feta and two variants of squid and everything was perfectly cooked. You definitely get your moneys worth here.

Hearty unpretentious and home cooked style meals that don’t feel touristy. Their ouzo collection is impressive and seafood fare is brilliant! Artichokes with beans and fish with a starter of olive oil, beans salad.

No regrets walking half an hour there for a dinner from downtown Athens. This place serves very fresh food prepared in the most delicate way. The server is extremely honest and sincere with the recommendations. Extremely worth it for the price vs quality ratio. Will definately return when back in Athens.

Firstly, the food is one of a kind. The service is incredible. If you know what to look for then check out the seafood case. If not, ask the server what is fresh. The stuffed squid is absolutely delicious. And Vasilis was very gracious and kind, as was the owner, George. Thank you my friends for a wonderful first night in Athens.

Lovely experience in this local family restaurant. Everything is very nice: service, atmosphere and, of course food.
The menu is quite innovative with fresh fish and brave flavours. Nothing will leave you still.
Price is very decent too.
I recommend the stuffed squid with tomato and feta cheese as well as the octopus ok any kind.
Be aware that only some plates of the menu are available according to the products so ask first what’s in for the day!

Although there are many places to eat fish in Athens, I had to go to this small restaurant. My friends, who often visit Greece and Athens recommended this place to me, and I knew they wouldn’t do it unless they know what they are talking about. The fish I had was just gorgeous. It melted in my mouth literally. It was also really satisfying to eat fish the proper way (or at least how I remember it from my home) – without a lot of spices… Just fresh, simple and tasty. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to everyone.
