Otaru is absolutely my favourite place! I’ve been here about 5 or 6 times since I moved to Richmond in May, and it’s truly where my love for Japanese food began. They never fail to impress me — the Volcano Roll is a must-have; we order it almost every time! I was just thinking (and craving!) Otaru’s food since I haven’t been able to visit this past month, so I decided to leave a review and upload all the photos I’ve taken. Can’t wait to come back soon! ❤️

DoorDash Order

Very first time ordering from here — I’ve never visited them in-store before.

Ordered from here on DoorDash. It was dinner time, and I ordered a teriyaki bento, but they canceled and refunded it because they ran out. That made me really disappointed and upset (just hangry).

So I just got the sushi, but the bento was for my mother, so I had to order from my usual sushi place.

I got the Dragon Roll, which is supposed to have masago, but I opened the whole sushi roll and found nothing — no masago at all. (View picture) That made me even more sad (hangry).

Also got chicken and other rolls — they were okay.

Not sure if this was a one-off or because it was a food app order, but I am thoroughly disappointed. I wanted to find a closer sushi place that I liked near my place, but unfortunately, the restaurant disappointed me.

The food was still okay and tasted nice. Just disappointed (and hangry) and upset that my mother needs to wait another 40 minutes for another order from a different sushi place.

Was looking for a quick late night bite with family and saw this place opened later than other restaurants in the plaza.

Although it was near closing hours, the server totally forgot our water/tea until we asked for it despite putting plates and utensils for us. It would have been a 2, but given a circumstances of near closing, a 3 is sufficient.

The food we ordered was a party tray for 3 and the portions was acceptable for a light bite with acceptable costs.

The atmosphere was very quiet and cozy. Washrooms was well maintained and seatings were on theme.

All in all, a solid 4 and will return to try again.

I’ve been to Otaru Sushi a few times now, and it’s honestly become one of my go-to spots. Every visit has been consistently great. The fish tastes incredibly fresh, and you can tell they really care about quality. My rolls are always beautifully made, and everything comes out just right.

What really stands out to me is how welcoming it feels. The staff are so kind and attentive — they make you feel genuinely appreciated, not just like another table. It’s clean, cozy, and just a really comfortable place to sit and enjoy a meal.

Whether I’m grabbing a quick lunch or meeting someone for dinner, Otaru Sushi never disappoints. Definitely a local favourite for me!

The service was great. I had the Unagi in a hot clay pot. That was the best. It is one of my favorite spots since moving here. I really appreciated the two waitress that served my drinks and food. Even the cooks too!

The place is neat and tidy.
Staff are friendly.

I love the Udon. The taste was good.
Kid’s menu portion was generous when compared to my udon.
The salmon sushi was great, too!

This is a Janpanese restaurant runned by, I believe, Korean.

I first tried Otaru Sushi at the restaurant and was blown away by how fresh and delicious everything was. Because it was so good, I later ordered a party tray for a potluck—and it was a huge hit. Everyone loved it, and it was the first platter to be completely empty.

I’m a big salmon lover, and the salmon here was unbelievably fresh with absolutely no fishy taste at all. The spicy salmon and the sauces for the sashimi rice bowl were especially amazing—so flavorful and perfectly balanced.

The rolls are not ordinary at all. Each one has a unique and special flavor, and every bite feels thoughtfully crafted.

This is truly the perfect place whether you’re dining with family, going out with friends, or bringing food to an important gathering. Otaru Sushi never disappoints and always impresses. Highly recommend!

Had a great experience at this Japanese restaurant, and Sunnie really made the difference. She was attentive, friendly, and knew the menu well without being overbearing. Service was fast, everything came out correctly, and she kept checking in at the right moments. Solid food and excellent service, would definitely come back and hope Sunnie’s working again.

We enjoyed a lunch here and it was very good! Had the salmon sashimi, salmon oishi, mango roll, chicken kaarage, tempura udon, and tamago and masago nigiri.

The restaurant is a bit small so definitely recommend to reserve beforehand. Parking is fine because the mall has enough space.

I have gone to this restaurant since it was Osaka years ago… it’s changed for the worst and almost solely due to the employees!! But also for the mice feeces and bugs in there food or rat chewed containers. Despite all the bad reviews I have heard through family and friends about this place I continued to give it my service as I preferred some of there rolls over my actual favourite restaurant in that mall (sushi Han) which has great service and kind servers who even remember my order half the time. That being said this is my last time going to otaru after today. I’ve been having the servers be rude to me for quite some time and I ultimately assumed it was do to I have 4 kids under 5yrs old and they will make a mess with the rice and I am on the floor cleaning it up for a few minutes after the meal and I have 2 strollers so one can be beside us with my 3month old and the other is umbrella stroller I can fold to keep out of the way if needed but it very much seemed to bother them. Today we go in and there is a basically empty restaurant so I ask for a table of 7 explaining we only need 5 seats but 2 babies are with us in strollers, I’m told they don’t seat 7 and they can’t confirm a table for us at all. I put my name on a waitlist anyways and 5 min later they invited us in. We weren’t offered high chairs which I assumed we wouldn’t and don’t use anyways as they store them in the bathroom next to the toilet and then they took our orders as bare minimum as they could (quite literally just stood there with out asking what we like but just waited for us to be hungry enough to tell them our order). They also did not give chopsticks or utensils for the kids until after our food was there and we walked up to one of them to ask for some thing to eat with. Now that we have our food and something to eat with we begin and something starts feeling really fricking cold… they opened the door as wide as possible as we were the table right next to the door both babies start crying of course and I need to put on my winter jacket to eat before my foods cold. We gave in and finally asked them why they’d do that and to please close it at least until we were leaving… they said they had to keep it open until exactly 2pm (3min from when I asked) due to health codes and government regulations… what!?!? I’ve researched this and the only thing I find is the opposite. It attracts pests to keep a restaurant door WIDE open like that especially in the freezing cold months. Then right after telling me this another family walks in and the door is immediately closed as soon as they are seated. So anyways I’m cold now and I go to order a miso soup… well both waitresses are casually eating a full course meal a couple tables down, I wave at her and make eye contact for her to nod and continue eating for a few more minutes until I walk over to there table and ask if anyone is there to serve me and she replies with “why what do you need?” Uhmmm to order actually.. so after a couple minutes she hands me a to go miso and the bill. At this point it was so clear that they were messing with me as much as they could. I start to be more assertive and say “this isn’t how I ordered it I want a spoon” they toss a spoon down and the waitress goes “really seriously you won’t just leave” immediately lost my appetite and then they hand me a bill for the miso and to go container. I did what I absolutely hate doing and left that rice on the ground for that lovely lady to clean:) sorry but really not sorry. Highly don’t recommend. I also have gotten extra bean sprouts on my dish for a few years it was always $2 but a while back it jumped up a couple dollars and then this time I ask just to see how much they screw around and now it’s over $7
