Tried the tonkotsu ramen, miso ramen, chicken yakitori, and a salmon roll.
Overall, the meal was disappointing.

The tonkotsu ramen was extremely salty. Salty enough that we considered asking for a remake.
The chicken yakitori was the best item; the sauce and seasoning were just right.

Not sure I’d come back, except maybe just for the yakitori.

The food was just okay. Portion is kind of small for the price. $30 combo comes with tiny bit of rice and a lot of salad to pad out the plate. It is very very strange that the waitress asked me. How would I like my beef teriyaki to be cooked? I was like what the hell. I’m not at a steak restaurant. It is Japanese. Make it well done. That should have been my wake up call to leave but I was naive.
The service as pointed out by many other posters here are very rude. They were very annoyed when I was asking for water after I waited for 10 minutes and still not getting them. They scolded me like it was my fault and was giving me the stink eye from a distance every time I looked their direction. The cherry on top is that they have the audacity to add 18% gratitude by force on every bill they have. This service does not deserve even 8% let alone 18%. I will not be coming back.

Osakaya is surprisingly affordable compared to nearby restaurants. You can eat dinner for less than $20 per person. We were seated immediately on a Wednesday evening, and our food came out quickly. The waitresses were polite and checked in on our table frequently. I ordered the sukiyaki nabe, and it was delicious! A lot of food for the price. We will definitely be back next time we visit Japantown.

Wow how is it possible?? I ordered lunch special ramen and takoyaki for around $17.50. Omg there is ONE papper thin of meat in the whole bowl. How can they serve only ONE piece of meat like that?? Please don’t visit this restaurant. The only reason we came here bc there was no line, but there was definitely a reason for that. Don’t waste your money!!!!

MADE US PAY CASH. SCAMMY.

What is going on with the staff here? We were seated at a table that was too small for my disability, and when I asked if another spot was available, the first woman immediately yelled “no” in my face. I pointed to an open table that clearly fit two people, and she insisted it was for three even though only two people had just left. The second staff member came by, and when I asked her, she said “okay” with no issue.

They cleaned the table, but it took about ten minutes, and another ten before anyone bothered to come take our order. At this point, we had already spent around thirty minutes dealing with rude, biased interactions since we are South Asian, along with unnecessary waiting just to flag someone down.

The food was fine. But when we went to pay with Apple Pay, their tap-to-pay kept giving an error because we did not tip. She kept flipping the screen back to the tip screen and saying “try again.” After three failed attempts, I had to pay cash. I believe this was a background intentional effort so that their tap to pay was not fully set up to take payments as some of these places prefer cash for tax and reporting reasons.

Overall, terrible vibe and a staff presence that feels blatantly biased. It is disappointing because the food is cheap, but it is very clear who they value. It’s sad that they treat people who resemble their chefs and back staffs appearance as lowly customers while valuing their white and East Asian counterparts with immensity.

Photos:

Women holding plate is the very biased and seemed racist one who denied me disability accommodation.

One with the menu taking orders is the one who took care of us but was clearly moving slow at her coworkers instruction and then tried to force us to tip and then ended up making us pay in cash. Scammy.

Tables is all the free space she refused to utilize to accommodate my disability. Girl the whole restaurant is open, relax.

Good sushi and katsu at a reasonable price (particularly for the lunch special, seemed pricier for dinner). Sushi was very flavorful and fresh. Katsu was slightly overcooked. Wait staff a little rough around the edges.

Fast service, affordable prices, decent ramen, tonkatsu, and salmon sushi, not the best one I have had but good and fast.

Koji (“Internaitonal”) Osakaya used to be my favorite lunch spot in Japantown (where I still drop by seeing friends having lunch or doing grocery) only until sometime after the COVID lockdown it got so crowded as Japantown rebounded, and its waiting list can be long especially on the weekend. Moreover, the qualify of food has declined, for example, stop using Japanese sticky rice instead of Thai broken rice. Otherwise, my favorite dish used to be combo #7 (Yakitori chicken and unagi served with miso soup, salad and rice) and occasionally I would order cold sake: Hakushika (very nice junmaiju). Now, the menu has been changed my favorite dish has been modified so that I only go there occasionally. (Note: It is unpleasant when yakitori chicken is not well done or semi raw. See pictures shown how to tell well done yakitori versus slightly raw. )
The place is crowded with tables are literally next to each other so you will feel quite strange or irritated if your neighbors like to chit chat while eating. I have never tried curry as it can get tricky but nabe is not bad. Its sashimi is rather thinly cut under the circumstances which is not appealing to my gusto (Nijiya on the corner of Post and Webster would be your best bet or my go place to pick up and make my own sashimi.)
The cooking crew at Koji appear to be Yucatecos but owners and waitresses are actually Thai and they are pretty friendly or laidback in general.
To be honest, Japantown has only a handful of native Japanese owned restaurants left according to my friend Ishikawa sen who just turned 82 and he had owned and operated Goemon, what a beautifully decorated classic Japanese restaurant on Irving Street (between 16th and 17th) in Sunset for more than two decades and sold it to a Chinese couple. Times have changed for the good and bad or maybe both. Oh well…

I came to this restaurant because a friend of mine recommended this place. Food we ordered was bland. When my sister asked for a to go box, the waitress threw the box and the bag on top of the sushi, and got box and bag dirty. That was a little bit rude for me. I’ve lived in SF for over 7 years, visited many restaurants, and this was the first restaurant that added themselves and 16.02 tip.
In the other restaurants I’ve been I get the choice to leave a tip. So be aware that they charge you, with 18% tip when you pay. I guess they could add their tip on their check, but in my opinion it was a little high for the customer service we received.

Stopped in here cause had open seating. The food was good, nothing spectacular. What you should expect from a mall restaurant. The food was priced ok. We really liked the unagi fried rice. Had nice pieces of meat on top and all through the rice. It was even better when I reheated the leftovers at the hotel. Dragon roll was OK, but slim on the tobiko and rice needed soy sauce to eat. My wife got the bento box, and she loved it all. We got the chicken skewers, and they tasted really good and tender. Waitress was nice and came by when needed. Food was served fast. Heads up drinks that are soda come in a can, and we’re 3 dollars a piece. Refills cost every time. Other than that, everything was as expected for a mall restaurant . Will be back for that unagi fried rice for sure.
