BIG MIKE SAYS 5-Star Review: The Original Hoagie Shop – Phoenix’s Hidden Gem for Philly-Style Bliss!

Tucked away in a vibrant Tempe strip mall (just a quick hop from Phoenix proper), The Original Hoagie Shop is a no-frills powerhouse of sandwich sorcery.

That colorful wall mural? It’s the perfect teaser for the feast ahead – those massive hoagie panels had my mouth watering before I even sat down. The spot exudes old-school charm with its green-and-orange accents, cozy booths, and the faint sizzle from the grill that screams “fresh-made magic.”
I dove into the classic Philly Cheesesteak, piled high with thinly sliced ribeye, gooey provolone, and caramelized onions on a soft-yet-chewy Amoroso-style roll (a rarity in AZ!). Juicy, flavorful, and not greasy – it transported me straight to South Street. My buddy grabbed the Italian Hoagie, loaded with Genoa salami, capicola, prosciutto, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, and vinegar. The meats were premium, the toppings crisp, and that tangy kick? Chef’s kiss. Portions are generous; we split fries (crispy, seasoned perfection) and still had leftovers.
Service is the real MVP – the owner chatted us up like family, recommending tweaks based on our tastes. Quick, friendly, and zero upselling. Prices? A steal – our feast for two, with drinks, clocked under $25. Pro tip: Go early; lines build fast for a reason.
If you’re craving authentic East Coast hoagies without the flight, this is your spot. 10/10, will evangelize to every Phoenician I know.

I finally stopped in here today and I am so glad I did. I ordered the classic Philly Cheesesteak, and it was absolutely amazing. The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned, the cheese was melted to perfection, and it was served on a fresh, crusty roll that held up to the very last bite. It genuinely felt like I was back in Philly. The staff was super friendly, and the service was fast. This place is definitely my new go-to spot for lunch!

Without being too overly dramatic, possibly the best sandwich I have ever had in my life. Owner’s husband is warm and welcoming, answered a couple questions I didn’t even know I had. Next time I stop by, I am in I might ask if I can bring my dog Yumi, she would love to dig her teeth on a donut (DD is close by) and then probably down a piture of water after!

Oh…I had the 8 Inch Philly Cheese Steak wonderful and felt full afterwards!

Just heavenly! Stopped here at random for lunch and split a Philly cheese steak with my daughter. We typically do to go as well, but the inside was a vibe. So cute and cozy!! Def my new fav lunch spot in Tempe!

Family owned and operated. Very good sandwiches and friendly service. I had the original Hoagie and my wife had the cheesesteak. The bread and all the ingredients were fresh and very tasty!

Stopped in for lunch before heading back to Buckeye. And let me tell you the Meatball sub hit the spot for my long drive home. I will definitely be stopping in next time I’m in town. Philly Cheese Steak is next on my list.

After I left the East Coast, never thought I would find a great Deli, especially Hoagies, Grinders, Submarine Sandwich’s and “Philly” Cheese steaks. This place rocks! Had the Italian sub with pickles and hot peppers, and was amazed how heavy this sandwich was when I got it home. The Original “Hoagie” shop was a dream! Glad the owner appreciates quality food, back East goodness, and hasn’t sacrificed old world City Deli styles with imitation. This OHS deli is the REAL deal! ♥️

Coming from Philadelphia, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this Arizona mom and pop sandwich shop. Their Philly Cheese steak did NOT disappoint. The cheese steak was filled with meat, provolone cheese, onions and peppers (which I added to my order). The bread was crispy but tender. It was outstanding.

Outside of the delicious food, what also impressed me was watching one of the employees (assuming an owner) help carry the food to a customer’s table. They took care and pride in how they treat their customers and present their food.

The menu was located on a huge screen TV and was easy to read. The decor of the shop was nothing to write home about. I didn’t see a public restroom for use, but who cares! My focus was on their food!!

Way to go guys!
