Orange garden has long been one of my most favorite places for their burrito size egg rolls which are very delicious with that vintage Chicago style peanut butter/ five spice flavor that you can only get in here. All the other dishes I’ve had are slightly above average, not amazing . I honestly could eat two or three orders of egg rolls and call it a night! It’s an old school Americanized Cantonese restaurant, with Chinese zodiac paper placemats in that vintage 1970s Chinese red & gold deco. The service is very attentive and friendly.

My wife and I have ate at the Orange Garden many times over the last 30 years… I could tell based on the food quality something was just not right… I asked the million dollar question… “Are you under different management”? The answer was simply the previous owners wanted to retire… The egg roles tasted good but my wife and I shared a sweet and sour chicken… They were soft almost doughy or soggy inside where all previous times were always golden brown and crunchy.. The vegetables i.e. tomatoes, green pepper slices and pineapple were incredibly small pieces… Staff was extremely pleasant. Service was quick.. This location has been in business under the original management for many decades… We’re very sorry, but I think we will ultimately end up finding another chinese restaurant to dine at

I visited after reading online that this is one of the oldest restaurants in Chicago. I found the food decent; for the price I’d say it was even quite good. I had the general tso and kung pao chicken and liked that they were not as cloying as some other Chinese American restaurants make these dishes. I’d definitely get takeout if I lived nearby, and the idea of people enjoying the same ok Chinese American food nearly one hundred years ago makes me feel like a part of the city’s history.

Well, nothing good can last forever. I’ve been ordering from Orange Garden for over 20 years, and it’s been perfection every time. I knew they were for sale, and unfortunately the new owner has not kept the recipes that made them famous. I will have to find a new place, as I was very disappointed with the quality of my order.

We really enjoyed all the food we ordered. Great portion sizes and affordable. Service was great! The only thing that can be improved on is having a kid’s menu. Some people have dietary or religious restrictions so having a kid’s menu with at least one vegetarian option would be great.

9/17 – I have been going to this terrific Chinese restaurant since my grandparents took me there in the 1950’s. Always great food and fast service. Anna and Julie are warm and friendly. 12/2 – Another great dinner. Love coming here. Anna and Ben are terrific waiters staff. 12/25 – Delightful to go on Christmas Day. Anna and Matt were terrific hosts. 2/10 – A terrific dinner. Ben was, as always, very friendly at the checkout! 3/12 – A great meal with very large proportions. Enough for two more meals at home. Anna and Ben were terrific. 4/3 – Ben and Julie were very friendly. Love this restaurant.

This is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Chicago. Their food is phenomenal. (Their egg rolls are delicious and DOUBLE the size of those anywhere else.) People from all across the country keep coming back. Thebes even hosted after wedding parties.

We’ve gotten Orange Garden take-out for over 20 years. I’m glad a new generation has decided to take over, but I wish they would stick to the original recipes on classic dishes. For example, the sauce for egg foo young used to be a delicious rich bean sauce that I totally craved – now it’s just a bland brown gravy that definitely takes away from the experience. There were other differences in the egg roll and beef chop suey that felt like corners were being cut. I wish the new owners well, but please go back to the traditional recipes!

Just had an evocative meal there. Very decent crispy egg rolls with Chinese hot mustard. Ooowee. Wonton soup, then garlicky shrimp in black bean lobster sauce. Harkens back to childhood days of chop suey joints complete with cellophane wrapped fortune cookies. Puts a smile on your face. Good service too.

Excellent service. Highly recommend egg rolls, wonton soup, beef fried rice and Szechuan beef. The beef was absolutely tender and cooked perfectly.
