Been here many times. I prefer this place much more than the other Japanese spots in Mill Valley. I lived in Hawaii for 10 years and have a high standard for Japanese food. They offer more options and everything I’ve ordered here is delicious. Will continue to come here. Their wine and sake selection is much better as well.

The night before Thanksgiving my large family ordered a lot of food for dinner, thinking it would be a nice treat. We came to pick it up at 6PM when the food was scheduled to be done and waited 35 minutes before receiving our food without once being acknowledged.
Ok so they were in the weeds, fine.

Then we got home and about 1/3 of our order was missing, and some of the rolls we did get, we did not order and were not to our liking. The quality of the food we did get was poor – over cooked chicken and mushy sushi

Then it gets really bad. When we called to try and get a refund we were treated so poorly. The first employee spent her energy trying not to get in trouble and didn’t really focus on helping. Then I asked to speak to the manager and never got a call back (waited 1.5 weeks) Then one of my family members came to talk in person and I am told she was treated rudely.

Then I got a weird defensive text from a staff member and not one apology for the inconvenience. Just rudeness.

I will never eat here again and suggest you don’t either

Small and cozy. Light jazz in background. Most authentic sushi+ in Mill Valley for sure. Not fast food fried like many others in Marin.

If you’re looking for actual sushi, this is a step below Sushi Ran for example but also a bit less pricey but more personal as its so intimate – you’re looking at the chef and you know he knows what he’s doing.

They seem to be working on a cute outdoor seating arrangement, that’s a work in process. Will be nice in the warmer months.

I’m looking forward to going back and trying an omakase experience. They are clearly capable. I’m told it requires making a reservation. Get that in Mill Valley!

Support local y’all 🙂

I’ve tried this place yesterday and it was a good surprise. The atmosphere very nice and cozy . I liked a lot of the hand rolls. The Japanese curry was good and tasteful unfortunately the udon it was very plain and mediocre for the price . Maybe adding some flavors more veggies and even a fish cake etc would be more tasteful and fun eating.

Otherwise, I loved the place. The portions were great and the service was nice. Unfortunately in my opinion the waiting for the other dishes as the udon and the Japanese curry. Overall it was good and people were very nice .

Oni Kuma is a new Japanese restaurant in Mill Valley. They serve Izakaya style food (Izakaya is a type of Japanese bar in which a variety of small dishes and snacks are served to accompany the alcoholic drinks). We have been a regular customer of their first restaurant, Shiro Kuma in San Rafael so we could not wait to try their new restaurant. Every ingredient was fresh as usual. Handrolls were very tasty, especially uni and crab roll is a must! Grilled pork jowl was grilled perfectly and went well with the sauce. The Japanese style steamed egg was light and melt in my mouth. We can’t wait to go try more dishes there!

Sadly we really like the food and ate there a few times. Then on a Wed before Thanksgiving we ordered take out. My daughter waited about an hour for the food. When she brought it home almost everything was either missing or not our order. It was over 350$. We ate scrambled eggs since we were 7 people and there was barely any food. My daughter called and a scared lady who answered said she worked there and made a mistake and would refund from her pay. My daughter said no I won’t allow that the restaurant should refund . The lady said no it’s my mistake and those are the rules! My daughter tried calling the manager many times and no one called back! Finally today we went in to explain . We got yelled at and accused of wanting free food. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Be aware the staff is afraid of management or owners. Food is good but this isn’t a place we will frequent and suggest you think about this issue too before eating there.

Pretty basic. The four rolls we ordered were all bland and of the same consistency. There needed to be some sort of textural contrast. The katsu chicken/curry side dish was overpriced, a bit too oily and definitely a let down.

Excellent! but way too bright… The food was delicious- my new favorite Japanese in Marin for sure 😉 fresh, simple, authenticate but with a fun twist. The hand roll sets were a good deal, rolls aren’t too overly done and more fish forward. Nori was fresh & toasty. Clean & modern atmosphere, friendly attentive staff & quick service.
My only complaint was that it was WAY too bright in there… Would’ve appreciated the dining room having half the lumen output for a better date night dining experience. Felt a bit cafeteria like. Would suggest a handful of paper lanterns or something to make it feel more approachable 😉
Can’t wait to go back regardless!!

So excited to have more new delicious affordable Japanese food in Mill Valley! All the hand rolls, ankimo, spicy tuna, and the oyster shooter were amazing. Can’t wait to try the katsu curry next time!

Amazing restaurant. For an appetizer, I had the tangy wings. I had a Japanese curry next and it was delicious. I haven’t had curry like this since I’ve been in Japan. Great staff working here as well.
