I had the house salad, a Shepherds Pie and an order of chicken quesadillas.
And, a good time!
Would definitely recommend
Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time back there chatting with Mohamed, the nighttime cook sharing laughs, talking about current events, and just having genuine, respectful conversations. He’s always been great and a big part of why I felt comfortable coming here regularly. Unfortunately, the kitchen had already closed last night, so he wasn’t working and wasn’t involved in this situation at all. Everything that occurred involved the bartenders and floor staff.
Last night completely changed my opinion of this place.
I had friends visiting from out of town three couples total. Two of the couples serve in the military and were on leave, visiting us in Philadelphia. We spent the day showing them the city, had dinner, saw the Liberty Bell and other sites, and decided to end the night somewhere familiar and relaxed.
Everything started fine, aside from some passive-aggressive behavior at the bar where my friend and I were ignored while the bartender immediately went to ID the women in our group. Strange, but we brushed it off.
The situation escalated around the gambling/slot machine behind the bar. One person in our group put in a dollar and immediately won. Another patron became visibly angry and irate over this. Instead of de-escalating the situation, the bartender began apologizing to that patron, as if someone else had done something wrong.
Later, when that same patron lost his money and walked away from the machine, we used it. He suddenly came charging back, became extremely vulgar and aggressive, and physically assaulted multiple people in our group. He was visibly intoxicated, angry, and out of control. He put his hands on us first. We did nothing more than defend ourselves and back away.
Despite this, we were treated as the problem.
We were shoved out of the bar immediately, doors shut behind us, and made to look like the aggressors—while the individual who initiated everything was calmly spoken to on a first-name basis. To make matters worse, the bartender had to come outside to hand us the money we had won because we were pushed out so fast we weren’t even allowed to collect it inside.
When asked for the individual’s name, staff claimed they “didn’t know him,” which directly contradicted how familiar and comfortable they were with him during the incident.
For a group that came in responsibly, caused no issues, and included active-duty military members simply enjoying their leave, this handling was unacceptable. I’ve been coming here for years without incident, and to be treated this way while an aggressive, intoxicated patron was protected is extremely disappointing.
I have requested camera footage and the identity of the individual involved. Management should seriously review how situations like this are handled, because last night showed a lack of accountability, safety, and fairness.
Very disappointing experience from a place I used to trust.
Response to response: Actually I think the place is 5 stars and I appreciate the measured response. I think you know of what I speak. The back and forth is fun. Just try to keep the banter respectful and have some patience with us. Not everyone is a regular and knows the deal on everything, although I want to be.
Not my style to be too explicit on here, as I don’t want to effect what others think or effect business. Not my place.
They also have a nice food menu (Philly cheese steak anyone?) with reasonable prices and the bartender will make some recommendations on cocktails or from their huge list of beers. Check out the game on multiple TVs.
