Very quiet and unique place in the middle of downtown area. Food is amazing! We had the best tuna ever in the United States. We also love the salmon roe and almost want more rice to go with that dish; this is how good it is. Chef did not chat a lot but focused 100% on food. Amazing experience!

Came here for my 9th anniversary. The hostess was gracious and accommodating. The sushi was unbelievably fresh and the chef described each fish. The music was pleasant and we had a great time.

W. Hubbard Street at night is a lively and vibrant area filled with bars and restaurants — it almost feels like New York’s West Village. My wife and I arrived at the restaurant, a small eight-seat sushi bar, about ten minutes early for our 5 p.m. reservation. A young Japanese lady greeted us warmly, confirmed our booking, and collected our jackets. During our 1.5-hour stay, she seamlessly played multiple roles — hostess, server, and even fish interpreter — answering every question with genuine warmth and knowledge.
Both of us were impressed by Chef Kanemura’s exquisite selection of fish and great attention to detail: juicy slices of red skin daikon radish, softly aromatic shiso leaves, and perfectly balanced sushi rice — subtly sweet, lightly tart, and beautifully textured, with each grain distinct and satisfying. The sushi nori was another highlight — thin, crisp, and aromatic — while the wasabi, infused with a refreshing hint of yuzu zest, added a bright and memorable finish.
When I asked my wife if there was anything she would suggest, she said, “it would be even better if the tableware could be reselected to match the chef’s refined taste — the current ones look a bit less artistic compared to the quality of the food.”
This dinner was a highlight of our three-day trip to Chicago — we truly enjoyed.

Top notch Japanese sushi chef with 35+ experience and extreme attention to details and service. Very classic and traditional omakase with fish flown from Japan by the best. The location is great with a small plate next the door but the omakase counter is on the second floor. Very clean but could use some authentic decoration and lighting to maximize the experience as I thought the lights were just too bright.

Absolutely delicious with high quality fish flown in from Japan. Beautiful presentation and attention to detail. Sat in front of the sushi chef and it was entertaining to watch. Highly recommend! Will definitely return for my next special occasion.

Exceptional hidden gem.
Chef Kanemaru has served at Kyubei, one of the best and most prestigious Sushi restaurants in Tokyo, for more than a decade.
His skills of cooking seafood, his network of getting one of the highest-quality fish from Japan, and his balance of exploring new and following the traditional methods are stunning.
Everything was tasty like fatty tuna, snapper, salmon roe, and sea eel, which are my favorite sushi in general, but I did not expect that I could have that level of Firefly squid, miso soup with dense clam broth, and Japanese egg omelette with minced shrimp in Chicago!
Highly recommended!!!

Omakase Room by Kanemaru is a fantastic new addition to the local dining scene, offering an unmatched tasting experience. From the moment you walk in, the warm and welcoming hostess sets the tone for an unforgettable evening. The chef, recently moved here from Japan, brings an incredible depth of knowledge and skill in traditional sushi preparation. Every dish is crafted with the freshest, highest-quality ingredients, and the attention to detail is truly impressive.
The fatty tuna and sashimi stood out as personal favorites—they were absolutely melt-in-your-mouth perfect. This is, without a doubt, some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. If you’re a fan of authentic Japanese cuisine, do yourself a favor and visit this hidden gem.

Great experience. Sushi is top quality and the Chef has been making sushi for 30 years. Drink selection is great and the fish was super fresh. Old school, simple and clean. Tons of good spots around for after dinner drinks, as well.

We had a wonderful time and the fish was premium quality! It’s an intimate seating with only 8 people and 16 course omakase prepared by Chef Kanemaru. We just came from Japan and the chef here gives an authentic omakase experience. Highly recommended! And try their plum wine, it’s 10/10
