When I see that sign and the rocky exterior wall, I feel comforted knowing I’m about to eat myself into a worthwhile food coma.
The aesthetics of the restaurant make it seem somewhat upscale in comparison to other locations, despite the food not being any fancier and the prices not being that unusually high. When I go to Denny’s or Red Robin, it feels like a casual day out. When I go to Olive Garden, it feels like an occasion even when it’s not.
The servers are friendly and polite, quick to bring out bread, soup, and salad that are consistent in quality. My favorite of the bunch is the Zuppa Toscana, which I get almost every time because of how satisfying it is. I always ask for seconds, if not thirds. Soup that warms the soul. The breadsticks are also warm and have a crunch without being brittle. I wouldn’t recommend the chicken & gnocchi soup because it never seems to come out with any of the promised dumplings. There will be two, if you’re lucky.
There’s an array of hot appetizers for a family or couple to share, and I’m a personal fan of the fried pasta dishes like the toasted ravioli and stuffed ziti fritta. Once you’re through with those and the aforementioned bread, soup, and salad, you can finally get to the main course. The pasta entrees.
Expect the dishes to be heavy and the portion sizes to be generous. There will more than likely be leftovers, and even if there aren’t, certain dishes allow you to order a second meal to go for just a few dollars. Olive Garden’s alfredo is a simple but reliable staple that I’ve enjoyed many times. If kids don’t know what to order, there is always that. If you love the alfredo but don’t want the meal to feel generic, try the chicken tortelloni version! The tour of Italy gives nice variety if you have trouble choosing what to get and if none of the options suit your taste, you can build your own pasta.
Lighter portions are on offer, and if you aren’t feeling like having pasta at all, there are a couple meals without it. Desserts consist mainly of slices of cake that are too expensive, in my opinion.
It’s not perfect every time, and some items are too pricey for what they are, but Olive Garden is a cozy and nostalgic place where people can sit down and talk over spaghetti and breadsticks. I have to love it.
I had been going to this location for years. Unfortunately since the old mgr left(Tall guy w/ a beard who I hope got a promotion), the food safety has become rather suspect. I worked in restaurants for years, so the first time I let it ride. There was some kind of plastic wrapping strip in my fettuccini Alfredo. They comped the meal…cool, but I have never seen such a thing & I am 50.
Next time I went in, the bartender was hardly visible, other customers in the bar tables were visible unhappy, apps and entrees coming out all at the same time, no drinks until the apps hit the table after a long wait, place wasn’t busy, those kind of things. The kid is young, so maybe he is just getting started.
