Just stopped in here on Sunday 09/26 coming home from Nacogdoches to watch SFA win 98-0.
For the order, we had:
1) Ole West Cheeseburger
2) Sissy Cheeseburger
3) Bean Bar
The Food – 4 Stars:
The burgers were great. Cooked well and decent sizes.
The Service – 5 Stars:
We were greeted, sat, and promptly attended to. The staff was friendly, courteous, and helpful and one even complimented my shirt (love it!). Love some good small Texas town hospitality!
The Price – 1 Stars:
Honestly very overpriced. Even for the ‘basket’ but considering this includes the Bean Bar and Ice Cream, the value still is higher than some of the ‘craft’ burger joints at the low end.
The Vibes – 2 Stars:
Understanding this building used to be a pizza place (probably twice over), they are working with an interesting space.
Overall, 3 stars. There is definitely something quaint about this place. Reminds me of an old Pizza Inn from the 90s, so there is some nostalgia there. Recommend if you are in Athens off the beaten path and not looking for a fast-food joint. They have some room for improvement and look forward trying other menu items in the future.

I have been going to bean and burger for 15-16 years…back then they were next to the Ole West Steakhouse.
My most recent visit was 9-8-2017 for lunch. I ordered the 1/4 lbs cheeseburger basket with pepper jack cheese and their homemade fries.
While I waited on my burger, I took advantage of the unlimited bean bar. I had the regular beans and a mini corn bread. The beans were cooked well, but only warm not hot and steamy. (They brought a new pan of beans as soon as I got a bowl, so I got another just to make sure I wasn’t getting an old batch. They were exactly the same flavor and temperature.) The corn bread was warm and not sweet corn bread, which is fine with beans to me.
The burger came out hot and the flavor was good. The fries were crisp and tasty as well.
They have a complimentary Blue Bell ice cream bar too! Today they had Vanilla, Strawberry, Banana Pudding, Cookies ‘n Cream and Butter Caramel.
My meal was $8.50 with tax, which is great considering I got a big patty, unlimited beans and real Blue Bell ice cream.
Cleanliness was on par for a busy lunch run.

Great dining experience! Would definitely recommend the French fries, tastes like they just sliced them and put in the fryer! Everything we had was great… chicken fried steak, chili baked potato, grilled chicken bacon sandwich and the patty melt. The bean bar was amazing as well. Service was courteous and fast.

Place was rough around the edges In appearance and no form of dress code. A typical embodiment of the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover.” We ordered 3 different dishes to split between us. And it was outstanding! The burger was juice and savory without the feeling of being greasy. The catfish was soft and fluffy and the breading was crunchy and satisfying. The chicken fried steak was crispy and tender with good consistency in the gravy. The server was kind, eager and most importantly sincere.
Overall:
Really was a great place to eat with an old friend, great food great service. Will definitely try to make this place a normal stop when i visit East texas.

This place is amazing! A MUST for everyone! A true hidden gem. After being rejected at the door by a local Mexican restaurant because it was 30 minutes til their closing time, we were at a loss as to where to eat dinner. We drove past this place and decided to give it a try because their parking lot was pretty much full. And we are so glad we did. The food, every single thing we ordered was beyond delicious. Reminded me of great grandma’s homemade cooking. The staff was genuinely warm and friendly. We will be back the next time we are in town.

Wow! That is great! I was driving through town and need a place to eat. I decided to google best local restaurants in Athens. After reading the reviews I was torn as to what menu items I would partake of. I selected the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and onion rings. I was not disappointed!
After nearly stuffing myself with the fresh salad bar and a small bowl of beans I was presented with a plate size crispy chicken fried steak and three large golden onion rings to go with my mashed potatoes. I started with the onion rings as they were almost unbelievably crisp and flaky. The texture was amazing and the taste was fantastic. The chicken-fried steak is one of the best I’ve ever eaten and certainly deserve to be ranked in the top 5 chicken fried steaks in Texas. I was so full that I had to pass on the last 1/4 of my mashed potatoes as I needed to have a little room left for the self serve BlueBell ice cream. The staff was warm and friendly. Highly recommended!

If I could rate this place a 10 then I would!!! Absolutely awesome customer service. Best bang for your buck here. We got the Chicken Fried Steak meal and Pork Chops. Came with salad and bean bar. Save room for Ice Cream, this place has hand scooped BLUE BELL.
