Our first time in did not disappoint.
We’d been hearing about their scrumptious burgers and “potatoes” (aka not fries!) but yesterday we finally had the opportunity to experience them ourselves.
A clever marriage between very basic ingredients and the chef’s creative magic resulted in a delicious lunch. Nice touches like unique/gourmet sauces; just enough salt on the potatoes; high quality beef and tallow; the right size hamburger bun…all combined to perfection.

Walk to in was excited as we read online they use beef tallow. Man who was behind the bar was chatting with the bar and just stopped talking to them and gave us a “death stare” we stood there smiling at him for a minute waiting for a “hello” or anything…. Absolutely nothing just an extremely uncomfortable stare. I want to make it clear that he wasn’t busy as he literally stopped working just to stare. We sat at a table and waited 2-3 uncomfortable minutes without being noticed by any of the waitresses and just left to go eat at Buffalo Wild Wings which was fantastic. Got serviced with a smile and they also use beef tallow so we didn’t miss out on anything. It’s only 1.5 miles away. Really enjoyed their Double Bacon Chili Burger with Beer Cheese fries. Dive bar fits Old Salt Outpost well. Definitely has a “locals only” vib. If you’re from out of town just go to Buffalo Wild Wings they have it all.

My girlfriend is a sucker for a burger… but not just any burger. She absolutely loved this one and so did I. We waited a little bit I was perfectly fine with that. One person running the grill and absolutely killing it and one running the counter. We will for sure be back. Got a double burger, potatoes, ranch & burger sauce. Thanks for the amazing experience and even better food.

We went to the Union Outpost for the first time tonight, a family of 4. It was delicious, and very unique. Tha main entree ia not listed specifically on the menu except for some vegetarian options. The server has to expalin the meat entrees that are available and then you choose your side or any add ons to the main entree. This is a steak house so the main entrees are quality cuts from local ranches. That makes the cost per entree high. Each of us had one of the three main entrees and we choose different sides to try. Everything was delicious and well made. The only part we didnt love was the pasta side. The wine was also quality and delicious. We took our dessert with us because we were so full we couldnt eat it there. So worth it for a special night now.

I’m not sure if I graded this right. It was about $50 for 2 burgers and drinks for a place located within a bar, but they were good burgers. I think this may be a place for locals. As a visitor, it just felt a bit off, but again, the burgers were good!

We arrived, all 20+ in our party, here in Helena for Trevor and Savannah’s wedding. Pre-wedding celebrations. About 20 burgers and 50 shots of tequila and ice cold beer later, we all proclaimed Gold Bar a winner-winner for hospitality, great service, best free range beef burgers and OMG! tallow fries potatoes that were so crispy, you almost needed earplugs! Mahalo from your new Maui, Kansas, and Las Vegas friends who will miss you. As we say in Hawai’i, “A hui hou!” Until we meet again! Mahalo!

I hesitate to write this for fear that the next time I visit Helena and try to get a burger and potato’s from the Old Salt Outpost I will be either standing in an hour or two line or God forbid that I can’t even get into the place.
However, they have fantastic smash burgers and the tallow potatoes are killer! I also like the idea of supporting Montana beef farmers. We support our local farm to table beef farmers.
I live in Missoula and look for reasons to make a trip to Helena just to eat there.

Best burger I’ve had in quite some time. Patty was very flavorful, cooked perfectly, and the potatoes on the side were amazing with the various dipping sauces. Wish they would open one in Butte! It would make a killing. Can’t wait to go back.
