Not many choices for lunch and bruschetta was disappointing. It’s a beautiful place but I’m not sure if I’m going back to eat lunch there. I do love the history it has though.

Great spot on the shore of Lake Champlain. Breathtaking views of the lake and the Green Mountains of VT. I was lucky enough to get a table right on the water and soaked it all in. My waitress was INCREDIBLY attentive despite how busy she was (Caryn). I ordered the Caesar salad and had it topped with grilled chicken. It was good enough. Chicken was grilled well, but tasted like bottled dressing and boxed croutons. My table neighbor ordered a lobster roll that looked awesome! I will definitely go back … beer’s cold and the folks are nice. A few cute shops close by and a lovely drive from Plattsburgh along the lake.

The Old Dock House in Essex, NY is a true lakeside gem that delivers the perfect blend of relaxed Adirondack charm and unforgettable views. Nestled right on the edge of Lake Champlain, just steps from the Essex-Charlotte ferry, it offers stunning panoramic views of the Vermont mountains and sunset-lit water that create an unbeatable dining atmosphere. Whether you’re seated on the deck under shaded canopies or inside the rustic, nautical-themed dining room, the vibe is warm, casual, and welcoming. Service is consistently friendly and efficient—even at peak summer hours—and the staff makes everyone feel right at home, from families with kids to boaters pulling up to dock. The cocktail list is a highlight (don’t miss the mango-infused “Essex Escape”), and the dog-friendly policy, sandbox for kids, and live music nights make it a true summer destination.

The menu leans into classic American and pub-style favorites with a focus on seafood, and it delivers with consistently solid execution. Favorites include the French Dip sandwich, coconut shrimp, and a generously stuffed lobster roll. Portions are satisfying, and there are gluten-free options available for those who need them. The casual vibe doesn’t sacrifice quality—this is hearty, comforting fare made for enjoying with a cold drink and a lake breeze. The Old Dock is only open seasonally, so timing your visit from May to October is key, especially if you’re planning to catch one of their legendary sunsets. Whether you’re arriving by ferry, by car, or by boat, The Old Dock House is a must-visit for anyone in the Champlain Valley looking for a memorable and relaxing dining experience. Five stars, every time.

Two twos my word ya gerbert memaws brisket was boosin. Also don’t mind my acoustic cousins they were drunk on all of the Shirley temples.

We ate here last night with our dog and had an exceptional time. The views were amazing and the service was excellent. Every one was incredibly nice and friendly and very accommodating for dogs. The food and drinks were good. It was exactly what we were looking for to relax and enjoy the beauty of the lake.

My fiance and I went here about 1.5 years ago and, to this day, we still rave about our experience here. Food was great, staff was so pleasant, funny, and good natured. The view was amazing at sunset and overall our experience was unforgettable!!

We were a party of 9 coming off a sailboat, with our well-behaved dog, looking forward to a nice meal. Instead, we were met with excuse after excuse from the manager about why we couldn’t bring our dog to sit outside—despite the fact that there were plenty of empty tables. We were told it was an “insurance issue” and that they couldn’t seat us on the “dog side,” yet we saw both a service dog and another non-service dog allowed.

One of our group ended up having to stay on the boat with our dog. As travelers from Vermont and NJ, we’re used to restaurants welcoming dogs with open arms. In all our travels, we’ve never encountered such inflexibility or such an unwelcoming attitude toward pet owners.

The manager (possibly the owner) was not just unaccommodating, but extremely rude. Service overall was terrible—any food substitution requests were met with a flat “No.” For a restaurant that was empty on a Monday, you’d think they would value customers.

We own a food business in NJ and pride ourselves on going out of our way to accommodate guests. This place could learn a lot about hospitality. Dog lovers—beware. We will not be back.

The only truly good part of this place is the outdoor seating with views of the lake. Though, the chairs that we sat in felt that they were barely holding my weight at 220 lbs. The service was okay. Our server was friendly though not overly attentive. The food is mediocre at best. The price you pay is not worth the food (for the most part). I ordered the $19 roasted turkey sandwich that boasts that it comes with “oven roasted turkey breast.” It was deli meat. It also is supposed to come with an aioli, which looked more like a super thin layer of just mayonnaise. My wife had the black and bleu salad. Though, with the lack of greens, it would hardly be considered a salad. I wish we had heeded the warnings from other reviews and just picked a different place.

We only had 30 min while awaiting the ferry, so we opted for a couple drinks at The Old Dock. Perfect. Wish we’d had time for dinner as the menu looked quite good. I had a tap beer and my wife a tangerine Martini. We got some of their parmesan fries. Sat on the deck overlooking the lake.

Wonderful ride on the ferry from Charlotte, VT to Essex, NY and the views are spectacular. Don’t expect the food to be any good as it is the poorest quality anywhere. Hostess was rude and clueless but our waitress was wonderful.
Go for the outing and enjoy the lake and views but order very little food, or eat before you go!

Whoever the older woman was who was hosting last night (august 10) was the most miserable, rude, and unwelcoming human being I have ever met. We had a reservation through google assistant but she looked at me like I was nuts when I said we had a reservation. She somehow didn’t write us in and couldn’t sit us. Offered no apology or alternative options. All she said was “no”. Clearly they do not want anyone to dine there. That woman should seriously consider a career change. Perhaps Dutch digger or working in a bottle redemption center. I have never been treated like that by anyone, anywhere. If she’s the owner, stay away. If she is just an employee, she really needs to be let go immediately. Spent $80 on the ferry ride over as well.
