The best thing to get is the shishito-infused Lion’s Head cocktail. This cocktail’s made for those who love grassy NZ sauvignon blanc. As for the food, I’d recommend the tender fall-off-the-bone ribs but ask for no mayo. The wings needed way less oil (check salt-and-pepper Chinese dishes for reference on how to improve this dish).
The kakigori should be skipped. I’m very picky about kakigori as it’s my favorite dessert. This one was a sno-cone with ice cream. The texture’s completely wrong. It’s disgustingly sweet.
Their sushi rolls and shareables were all great, especially their wings and seared salmon. The menu was quite large with a lot of different sushi, small plates and some large plates to choose from. The servers were all great and very attentive as well.
I’ll definitely have to come back and try their Japanese saki.
We told our server it was our first time and asked what he recommended. His helpful response?
“Everything on the menu is good. I can’t tell you what to order.”
Fantastic. Nothing like a choose-your-own-adventure menu when you’re trying to have a special dinner.
Cocktails were great—so we thought we were off to a good start. Then the food arrived and the downhill slide began.
Clam soup: essentially plain miso with microscopic clams whose shells apparently fused with the meat at birth. Not sure if they were meant to be eaten or simply admired as decorative stones.
Miso cod: We didn’t even have to taste it—our noses waved the white flag the moment it hit the table. Fresh fish does not introduce itself with a strong “I am no longer fresh” aroma. We flagged the manager, who took it away quickly—thankfully before it could evacuate the room.
Brussels sprouts: good flavor, but limp. Think “spa day,” not “crispy appetizer.”
Soft-shell crab: shockingly delicious—finally a dish that reminded us what competent cooking tastes like.
Then came the sushi adventure. We ordered the Hamachi Jalapeño roll. After a mysterious delay, the waiter informed us the chef accidentally made Hamachi Serrano instead—but hey, it’s free!
The Serrano version was actually the best dish of the night.
The actual roll we ordered? It looked and tasted like something you grab from the supermarket at 8 p.m. when all the good stuff is gone.
After all the hype, this meal left us asking one serious question:
Has Chef José Garces tasted anything coming out of this kitchen lately?
Because if he has, then we’re even more confused.
We won’t be rushing back. Our anniversary deserved better—and so did the fish.
Went with a couple of friends and sat at the bar. The inside is very inviting, modern chic look. The bartender was very knowledgeable and friendly. Drinks were made right and even got a round of sake on the house.
We ordered about 9 items to try. Everything was amazing. The shashimi pieces were larger than other establishments and very good tasting. The scallops were some of the best I’ve ever had and so was the short rib. It fell off the bone and very tasty.
I am excited about the small plate, tapas style servings as you can order and taste alot of different things.
My only gripe is parking, we came just after 4pm so we were lucky.
This was a very good dining experience and I will be back. Hope this place makes it and keeps up the standards.
