Service was great. Our server was friendly and helpful. Since we were a party of six, the gratuity already was added and our server kindly pointed that out when she brought the bill. There is a private area in the back of the restaurant, and that’s where we ate. It can seat quite a few people.
Parking in the area can be a challenge, but fortunately, the Mission Bartlett garage is only a couple of blocks away.
The restaurant itself has a modern decor and the noise level was very nice for a late afternoon lunch.
We started off with the Yuzu Foam Oysters which really set the bar for what was to come. The yuzu foam was intriguing to see as an offering, and it absolutely blew us away with how well it went with the oysters. Creamy and Umami— so so good!
We ordered a few rolls: Cyclone Roll, Snow Mountain Roll, Salmon Lover Roll, & the Spicy Tuna Roll. Every roll tasted fresh, a great balance and ratio of fish to rice, perfect amount of seasoning, and expertly presented. Each roll had excellent flavor. My colleague and I both agreed that we were impressed with how well each tasted!
To wrap up our meal, we ordered The Toast. This is hands down something everyone in San Francisco must try at least once… because it is unique and delicious. Uni Cream-Toro Tartare + Uni Caviar on a buttered thick toast— it was DIVINE.
I am so glad I decided to venture out across the city to try Okaeri. This place is a winner. The service was great, the restaurant looks nice, and the quality of the fish and flavor was fresh and delicious. I will definitely be coming back and I highly recommend if you appreciate authentic and delicious Japanese food!
I got the omakase menu and it was excellent. The little starting plate they gave had an assortment of little bites that each had a very interesting assortment of flavors and textures. I especially liked the tempura with (from what I remember was) a little flower shaped radish piece on it. As for the nigiri, each piece blew me away. They hit each piece with a blowtorch for just enough to slightly render the fat so every piece coats your mouth in fat and flavor and it is just delicious. I have had a lot of sushi all around the world including Japan and this is probably the best I’ve ever had.
The service is great, every person I spoke to was very kind, friendly, and accommodating. I was a little anxious going somewhere like this on my own for a special occasion but everyone made me feel welcome.
I highly recommend visiting Okaeri!
One star reviews are fake ? I think so.
Portions are big taste and freshness of food is fantastic. I will come back. Marcel is exeeed my expectations. Hot starter Hamachi is giant. The only thing not my cup of tea – tins tartar. Otherwise is amazing
She mentioned that table was saved for 4 people and she gave the impression as if there were 4 parties reservations.
Food was average – had the uni butter toast, nigiri tasting, miso gindara, and hamachi truffle. Everything was okay but nothing exceptional for a sushi restaurant.
The server kept interrupting our conversation to ask about orders and payment which felt pushy.
The combination of being dishonest, ungenerous regarding seating choices when the restaurant was empty, mediocre food, and intrusive service made me decided it’s not worth to come back. There are better sushi options in the area with more welcoming service.
The atmosphere was warm and stylish, creating the perfect setting to enjoy such an amazing menu. The service truly stood out, attentive, knowledgeable, and welcoming from start to finish.
Okaeri is definitely a place worth visiting if you love great food, a beautiful environment, and top-notch service. I’ll absolutely be returning and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.
ATMOSPHERE:
The intimate setting feels like a hidden gem, with a small bar seating area perfect for watching the chefs craft each dish. The expanded space on 26th Street holds about 20-30 people, blending a minimalist yet lively vibe with dim lighting and an open kitchen where the charcoal grill adds a smoky aroma. Even late, the ambiance remained welcoming and relaxed, ideal for a special meal.
MENU:
Okaeri offers a dynamic omakase experience with a multi-course journey of seasonal ingredients, alongside a la carte options like nigiri, sashimi, handrolls, and tempura. We enjoyed oysters, a variety plate, several rounds of nigiri, handrolls, and a tamago (egg) dish, all showcasing fresh, high-quality fish and creative presentations tailored by the chefs.
FOOD:
The omakase kicked off with fresh oysters, briny and perfectly shucked, setting a high bar. The variety plate brought an assortment of nigiri: tuna, salmon, and others; each piece showcasing pristine fish with subtle, balanced flavors, enhanced by warm, lightly seasoned rice. The handrolls were a delightful surprise, packed with fresh fillings and a satisfying crunch, while the tamago offered a sweet, custardy finish that tied the meal together. Every bite felt fresh and thoughtfully prepared, making it a standout experience even late in the evening.
SERVICE:
Arriving 30 minutes before close, we were impressed by the excellent service. The staff seated us at the bar promptly, and the chefs and servers remained attentive and friendly, pacing the meal perfectly despite the late hour. Their knowledge and enthusiasm added to the enjoyment, making us feel right at home.
TIPS:
Seating at the bar is key for omakase >> book ahead via text for parties of 4+ or arrive early to snag a spot, as it fills up fast. They’re closed Mondays, with dinner hours typically 5:00pm-9:30pm, so plan accordingly. Parking in the Mission is street-only and challenging, so consider public transit or rideshare. Pair your meal with sake for the full effect.
OVERALL:
Was it worth the late visit? Absolutely. Okaeri Japanese Bistro delivered an exceptional omakase experience with fresh, creative dishes and top-notch service, even close to closing time. We’ll definitely return for another round at the bar.
