Oh’ Calcutta, a culinary dream realized by childhood friends Gopal Chandarana and Freddy Lee, opened on February 23, 2023. Rooted in their shared Calcutta heritage, the restaurant offers a modern twist on Indian cuisine. Freddy, whose culinary journey was inspired by his mother’s cooking and refined by his work in numerous fine dining restaurants up and down the East Coast, designed an Indo-fusion menu blending Eastern and Western styles. The dishes are further enhanced by the restaurant’s warm ambiance, modern chill music, and inventive cocktails.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, never having tried Indian food. When we walked in the staff was super friendly and attentive. Our server was Joshua, and he was fabulous. We ordered the keema lamb poutine as an appetizer. My husband said it was delicious, but unfortunately I was unable to try it due to a food allergy. However, Joshua suggested the tandoori meatballs for me, as another option and they were so good. I had the chicken curry and my husband had the sabir goat rezala. Both were amazing. This was an absolutely wonderful experience. We will definitely be going back!

We went for our anniversary in October. We were seated immediately, and our waitress Idah was excellent. She was very informative about food options and recommended me their peach cobbler martini, which was amazing. It is more modern fusion than authentic traditional Indian food. We got drinks, appetizers, entrees, and dessert, so it ended up being a little pricier but I will absolutely be back for special occasions!

This place has great ambience and great views of the downtown. The portion size of every dish is sufficient. However, the indian flavors still need some serious work. The Calcutta biryani was flat in taste. The omelet curry was tasty. The pani puri is outright weird as can be seen in the photo itself. However its water mix tasted good.

Just had an absolutely outstanding experience here – easily some of the best food and service I’ve ever had in Winston-Salem. Joshua (the team lead) went above and beyond when I mentioned I was looking for healthier options. He listened carefully, asked the right questions, and created something incredible that wasn’t even on the menu. Seriously attentive and talented. This spot is still firmly in my top 5 in the city – maybe even climbing higher! Highly recommend.

What a place!!! We stumbled across this gem on our way to Myrtle beach.
True to their name- Fabulous food, lovely decor with Kolkata’s landmarks in their portraits, absolutely fantastic service and they took great care of us. They asked us if we wanted some chillies and onions along with our food (who thinks of that!) We requested for some mouth freshener and they even served that.
The food was delectable, finger licking good, fish was well cooked, samosas were made fresh, the chutney were just perfect and even the unique tangra momos were too good. The only flaw that I found were the serving sizes were HUGE. One curry can be easily split between 4 people. You should either get the starters or the main course, but don’t get both- its a lot of food. We will come back here for sure.

This is the best Bengali food place in the North Carolina area. PERIOD. Food was the best. The food feels just like home. Ambience is amazing. And if you are from the subcontinent please talk with the owner if he is available. He is a great friendly guy and very helpful in selecting the food that will hit your spot.

Walking into this place, I received a warm greeting from the gentleman at the entrance. The aesthetics and atmosphere of the restaurant set the tone for the quality of service I was soon to receive. The waiter was very thorough in the description of the items listed on the menu and recommended a few dishes being that it was my first time dining there. I was very pleased with the experience and with the food I had received. This was the best Indian food I ever had. I had the Kolkata Chicken. 10/10

Great ambience and location. However this place DOES NOT serve traditional Indian food. The biryani is blasphemous. That is NOT a Calcutta biryani. Please don’t call it that. Panipuri was served with cold filling and pani. It should be room temperature.
Their special: the lamb poutine was great so was the crème brûlée. Our server was super nice as well.
But very disappointed with the food. If they are advertising this as real traditional food from Kolkata: buyer beware. If you don’t care about that it’s a decent place for food.
Edit: Since you responded to my review, your restaurant has multiple photos and placards with the word ‘traditional’ in it. As far as reimagining goes, some things are better left untouched, especially when reimagination includes cold water and cold filling for panipuri!!
