I’ve been coming to Oceanview Diner for almost 20 years. It has never disappointed.
I come mainly for the scrapple, but I love the challah french toast, the souffle pancake, and the potato pancakes.
The mocha is not too sweet, just to my taste. The water has no off-flavors.

New to Oakland and this is the only place I’ve eaten twice in the two weeks.
The best pancakes I’ve ever eaten, both times. It’s hard to describe how fluffy these are.
Staff super friendly. Coffee constantly filled. Real syrup. I don’t want to eat breakfast anywhere else.

Much enjoyed the Mexican scrambled eggs for breakfast. Good coffee. Came back the next day for a stack of pancakes and a glass of chocolate with whipped cream. Service was v. good. While the food is good, what I really enjoyed was the staff who look like they enjoy their work and working with each other.

When Bette’s announced that they were closing we were crestfallen…..and then Bette’s announced that its staff would be opening again as The Oceanview and we were relieved. The food here is solid if a little overpriced. But that’s fine: it’s worth it and the clientele in the area can support the place longterm. I mean, Bette’s was Bette’s for _decades_ and you don’t remain if your food isn’t up to par. Especially on 4th street. The service can be a little slow but it’s understandable; I’ve never seen them underwhelmed. The menu is generous and Darryl treats each dish like he invented it. Which might actually be the case, but no matter. We’ve never been disappointed. Just _go_.

One of the best breakfast spots in the bay!
Swap your toast for a freshly baked pastry.
Homemade sausage. Super fast service. They know what they’re doing. I recommend the ham and cheese omelette

Great food, friendly servers, usually a significant wait, but there are plenty of fun shops to wander around. Be aware that the largest group they can accommodate is 5 and that’s putting one person at the end of what is basically a four-seat booth. It’s fine if you know that’s what you’re signing up for, but might be an unpleasant surprise if you didn’t know.

The new owners do keep up the old vibe and cool menu. I always get the Philadelphia breakfast with scrapple that is as good as any, fried eggs, sourdough toast and fried tomatoes. They know how to fry scrapple, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Eggs are good. My wife gets the Maryland breakfast with corned beef hash, which she loves. Staff is super friendly, particularly the greeter, who is super social. Their homemade blackberry jam is more of a compote but tasty on the sourdough. All in all it is a diner as you expect it. Doesn’t have the old jukebox and floating pie but is still classic.

It was a great experience all around!
The staff was super nice and welcoming, we went with our dog and they even gave him a treat. They’ve got a good variety of options and we were all pretty satisfied.
Would recommend the potato pancakes and the chicken sandwich with pepper (the bread was so fresh it was still warm!!)
Plus the drinks were pretty big

Great location in the middle of a great little part of Berkeley. Old diner vibes with good food to match. It met expectations and was definitely a place that I would try again. The salmon hash was great and the biscuit. Oh the biscuit. Somehow the biscuit stayed nice and hot throughout our time there.

Went in on a Saturday for brunch with friends.
They were very busy and did not take reservations. We sat after our full party had arrived. It was my first time here and I felt it was just okay. They didn’t have a lot of options on the menu. I ordered the bagel plate and shared it with a friend who ordered the potato cakes. The bagel was good ( hard to mess up a bagel!) but the potatoes were bland.
We also stopped at the bakery attached to the restaurant. I got cookies and brownies for the family. We all had the same opinions of very dry and not good for the pastries.
