Open since 2001 and across the street from One Ocean, next to a hopping frozen custard place, it is spread out along two storefronts, one side a casual, bar-occupied “martini lounge” (incredibly brightly lit before 8 p.m.), the other cozier and elevated in style. Same menu both areas, same intensely accommodating service. The food, from owner/chef Daniel Groshel, features superb shrimp from nearby Mayport (in my opinion the best shrimp on the East Coast), and the Atlantic Beach native and Culinary Institute of America-educated chef has a deft hand with seafood, specialties like grilled meatloaf, and one of the best shellfish bisques we have ever tasted. The beautiful Beach Bake layered a firm piece of baked cod over smashed and sautéed potatoes and a sweet corn coulis, topped with broiled bay scallop, lobster and blue crab gratin (much like the ocean sauce at my beloved Adolfo’s in New Orleans … but better), and dressed with appropriately tart lemon beurre blanc. It was so perfect a dish that I didn’t need to taste my partner’s seafood cioppino, even with its temptingly aromatic smoked tomato broth, clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, flounder and fennel mélange.

Almost declined to review because of New Year’s service but we were just so disappointed. When we made reservations online only 5:15 and 9:00 were available, so we chose 5:15 and the restaurant was at maybe 30% capacity the entire 1.5 hours we were there. We were seated outside and were the only table out there the entire time. Walked in at 5:03 got seated at 5:05 and ordered drinks. Took about 30 minutes to receive our first drinks with no apology. New year’s menu was $75 each. For starters, we asked how many deviled eggs came and the server said “5 or 6”, so we ordered them and the oysters. They brought 2 oysters and 3 deviled eggs. We both laughed at the portion size. Salads – the wedge salad was a good portion but my wife’s Caesar salad was so small, picture attached. Again we laughed and thought if this was how the dinner was going we didn’t want to see our entrees. My wife ordered seafood pasta for her entree and it was again a small portion that reminded her of one of those knorr side noodle packets. My surf and turf I asked for between “medium and medium rare” and it came out rare, purple cold and chewy. Sent it back it came back rare again and I just ate it. Lobster tail was chewy not tender at all. Server was extremely uneducated about the menu. So many things to be disappointed about, spending $200+ on this meal and drinks we expected so much more. We won’t be returning.

Attended Friday’s happy hour and it was great! Can’t believe we didn’t try this place earlier. Calamari was delicious and so were our drinks.

I was so disappointed. Way over priced n portions wouldn’t fill up a child. Walked in and host just looked at us until a server seated us. Was so hungry I had to eat right away 2 doors away. The management obviously only cares about profit, the wine glasses had a a line on it, I guess that’s to make sure I don’t get to much in my glass. I will never return or suggest any to go there.

My wife and I came here on date night and we couldn’t be happier. We ordered a bunch of appetizers, cocktails, and a bottle of wine and we are beyond satisfied. The wait staff is fantastic, the ambiance is romantic but not too serious, and the food is phenomenal. I highly recommend this restaurant for dinner and a nice relaxing evening on the beach! We’ll be back, for sure!!!

If you love whole red snapper seasoned & cooked to delicate perfection with crisp potatoes, don’t miss this restaurant! It gives fish & chips a whole new meaning. The slaw served with it was good, not stellar, but the fish far made up for it. Reed-our server is excellent & knows every aspect of the restaurant as he has a long history with the restaurant. Don’t miss this gem!

Our 14 year old daughter chose this restaurant so we had no expectations. We were pleasantly surprised as we dined .The dishes were full the food was of quality and everything was hot.We enjoyed our meals we actually had food to take home..We would look forward to dining there again. Surprised at some previous guests reactions but fine dining has its own lane.Dishes take longer when they are made fresh from scratch and are never in competition with the local buffet for quantity ..Not sure about anyone else’s experience at this restaurant but ours was good.

Very good menu. Attentive good bartenders and staff. Menu is awesome with seasonal changes. Get the seasonal holiday duck breast! Martinis are all detectable and bartenders can tweak them to your preferences easily. Love it here. Great atmosphere.

This was our second visit to this restaurant as we always like to give the first visit a mulligan if things don’t go quite right. The reservations are easy to make and seating is prompt and comfortable. The second dining room from the bar area is quite loud and you can’t hear your server announce the specials. This is where the evening takes a wrong turn. This spot is known for Martinis and we have yet to get more than two served per person in a two plus hour meal. I guess if you sit at the bar you get better drink service but table service is spotty at best. Overall service to say the least is not good. It took a half an hour for us to get our appetizers and cocktails. We had to ask for refills on everything including water??? When our food finally came out it was not hot but medium temperature. Food was just ok and our server said they were trying a new chef and I guess that’s why everything was as it was. If we ever go back we will just do apps and sit at the bar. Not a great dining experience. Go for drinks at the bar if you must.
