Found myself in the area and saw some good reviews for Nytia’s Soul Kitchen so decided to grab some takeout for dinner.
Nytia was out front chatting with some other customers and her son was working the register – both incredibly friendly people.
Nytia’s service and hospitality went above and beyond. I’d heard about her famous catfish nuggets and ordered a portion, she unfortunately told me she couldn’t spare any because she had a large private event starting in 1 hour. When I’d explained that I was only in the area for the day and was excited to try some she without hesitation, brought me a sampling straight from the fryer.
To nobody’s surprise… the catfish was worth all the hype – incredibly crispy on the outside, tender and buttery fish on the inside, the dredge was salty, spicy, and peppery – true comfort food.

In addition, I ordered the wings, salmon cakes, Mac and cheese and collard greens.
The wings, like the catfish were crispy, well seasoned and juicy on the inside. The salmon cakes were hearty and flavorful, my only complaint about this dish is I wish the bed of salad underneath was accompanied by a light dressing. The Mac and cheese was gooey and delicious. The collard greens were tender with a slight crunch in a warm tangy salty broth.

Having seen firsthand how difficult it can be to operate a restaurant, it’s nice to visit a thriving family owned and operated place with banging food and wonderful hospitality.

Highly recommend!

Southern vibes. Cat fish was 10/10, get the nuggets because they are crisper. Collard greens 9/10 a little sweet but that is a preference. The Mac and cheese was 7/10 it was authentic mac and cheese but I suspect that they make a big batch that causes it to be on the drier side. The chicken wings 8/10 I looked the dry rub and they were nice and crispy. The yams 8.5/10 I didn’t want to try them because I’m used to them having marshmallows on them but I took a chance and they did not disappoint. The owner was so nice and the vibe was cool. Overall the meal was 9/10 catfish nuggets were the star. I was reading a lot of the comments saying that the owner shouldn’t have had her kids serving and she needs some pointers on how to cook but to keep it 100% you all just don’t want to see a black business thriving. You will go up into a Chinese restaurant and their 9 year kid will legit say “what you want” and you will proceed to order the uncleaned chicken wings that’s only seasoned with soy sauce. No shade no tea but we just got this soul food spot out here so support her business and keep it pushing.

We decided to give this spot a try after wanting a meal that would not only fill our stomachs but our soul, and I’m glad we chose Nytia’s. We ordered two soul food plates — 1 meat and 2 sides for $19 each. I went with the garlic and herb wings, and my wife got the hot honey wings. Both came with about six wings each, and they were so flavorful and meaty!

For sides, we both chose collard greens and mac & cheese. The collard greens were seasoned perfectly, and the mac and cheese was rich and delicious — definitely comfort food done right. Each meal also came with cornbread, which for me was the only miss of the night; it didn’t have much flavor and didn’t seem super fresh, but to be fair, we went around 6 PM, so it might’ve just been late in the day.

We tried two desserts — the pound cake and the peach cobbler. The pound cake was a bit dry, but that peach cobbler? Amazing. Sweet, warm, and full of flavor.

We also got a side plate of fried catfish, and wowww… that was a showstopper! Crispy, fresh, and perfectly seasoned — I’d honestly make the 30-minute drive again just for that catfish alone.

All in all, this spot deserves way more attention. You can tell the food is made with love, and with a few small tweaks, it could easily be one of the best soul food restaurants around. Definitely worth checking out!

The service & atmosphere was impeccable. The establishment was very clean & inviting. I had the opportunity to meet and speak with the owner & her son openly. I had gotten the Catfish(3) good size pieces, candid yams & greens and cornbread. I did ask were they really from the South and they said yes. We talked about the sweet tea & desserts. The sweet tea & peach cobbler were great. I will return to try another meal. I will go back to talk with them because I have a few (helpful) suggestions for next times. Some soul food establishments say they are from the South and you taste the food and you be like, I don’t think so. Thank you again Nytia.

This time around I had to get a large order of wings!! Cause they are that good..Nytia’s never fails anytime I get the sweet chili so consistent and flavorful fried just right each time.

Btw it’s a little tricky to pick up your order because of location..but I find if you park on a side street, and walk across the street right quick..lol it works for me.

O. M. Goodness! So good! We placed order online for pu and it was ready the time it mentioned. I had fried catfish w 2 sides mac and cheese and collard greens with a piece of cornbread. Fish was light and fried/seasoned perfectly. The mac and cheese was sufficient, not gooey and juicy but still good. The cornbread was sufficient not sweet cakelike. The greens were perfectly seasoned and I love the fact she uses turkey as the meat to cook in it. I also ordered 6pc wings sweet and spicy, perfectly fried and the wet seasoning was so flavorful. My husband got the fried porkchop w 2 sides fried okra and greens. The 2 big thick porkchops was seasoned perfectly, the meat was a tad dry but still remarkable. The fried okra was perfect and not soggy. Got the peach cobbler, wasn’t too sweet but crust was mixed in so to speak. Everyone prepares cobbler differently. Got the banana pudding was perfect but not in a mason jar like listed lol. We will definitely put Nytia’s on our eating list. Great job!!

I came here with high expectations and WOW was I blown away. Me and my wife ordered a soul bowl with that delicious Mac and cheese. I could see why a lot of food was sold out. This has to be one of my new go to places. You’re gonna be seeing me here after every paycheck. I love the nice small comfort of the building it makes the food speak more! The amount of food was perfect and worth every penny.

THE SERVICE:

Upon entering the restaurant I was greeted with genuine smiles and kindness; a true southern hospitality experience. As I waited for my order I observed the gentleman in the kitchen pause each time a guest entered to offer a greeting. The younger gentleman working the register and packing orders was well mannered, and displayed good customer service.

The atmosphere was inviting, and the small dining area was clean and organized. I ordered my meal online, but had an additional wait (Approximately 10 minutes) past the pickup time.

THE FOOD:

I ordered the “Soul Bowl” selecting the fried pork chop, candied yams, baked macaroni & cheese, and a separate side order of collard greens.

The thick center cut pork chop was seasoned nicely and fried to perfection- the standout bite. The “candied yams” had the consistency of loose mashed potatoes; the flavor profile was akin to a sweet potato pie filling vs the traditional southern dish.

Traditionally, the yams would be cut into slices or chunks topped with butter, sugar and spices. During the baking process the yams release liquid creating a thick syrup because it mixes with the sugar resulting in the candied effect. This was an interesting interpretation, and not my palate pal due to the consistency.

The baked macaroni and cheese was a beautiful disaster. Although the dish looked appetizing, it was very dry and flavorless. The collard greens were cooked to the perfect consistency, and made with love. However, the dish wasn’t my palate pal because I could taste the added sugar rendering the dish too sweet for my savory preference.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

I appreciate traditional (without a cheese roux) backed macaroni and cheese because it pays homage to the southern classic. However, the downside in commercial cooking large batches- the dish will dry out if kept in a warmer over an extended period of time. Especially if the dish is lacking enough cheese, butter and milk; in addition to not being properly sealed to lock in moisture. From what I tasted, the dish needed more of everything, especially salt and pepper.

This restaurant is marketed as traditional southern cuisine. As such, the candied yams were a huge letdown. I think renaming the dish sweet potato casserole is more appropriate.

There was too much liquid in the side collard greens resulting in spillage during transport. The portion of collard greens is too small for the container used- adding more liquid made it look fuller, but created a mess.

There is a discrepancy with your soul bowl (pork chop) description on the menu vs online ordering, and the printed receipt. The menu states pork chop (meaning 1), but when ordering it changes to “pork chops”, indicating more than one. This can cause confusion and lead to potential customer dissatisfaction. My serving was very meaty and satisfying, but I’m unsure if I was supposed to have 1 or 2 pork chops.

I suggest rethinking the packaging and or plating of this specific soul bowl if only serving 1 pork chop, because the meal looks skimpy. Maybe add a piece of cornbread to fill the space.

THE VALUE:

I think the price point aligns with current industry standards, but the portion sizes are below average, but satiating. The inviting atmosphere and amazing hospitality created a returning customer to further explore the menu.

My first time in Taunton and I checked this place. The food was amazing it is very hard to come by good soul food the fried catfish bites was to die for packed with seasoning fried crispy just the way I get to eat it back at home in South Carolina. The fries were seasoned properly as well. I loved the yams it was amazing. I would rate my whole plate 10/10. They also had tables for dining in very cozy. I also had pineapple upside down cake which was immaculate. Love this place and I would recommend this place

We went during the lighting of the green which is soooooo busy and the food was absolutely amazing! Literally perfection and that was during the madness rush of the lighting. We will definitely be back to try them during normal hours, when they have the full menu but the chicken sandwich and fish sandwich which came with 2 drinks their homemade fruit punch and lemonade plus 2 desserts banana pudding and pineapple upside down cake we a 10 put of 10. Highly recommend!
