This not to say that the other options are not good but they can be lacking, overwhelming, and/or both. The fish has always been well prepared and properly made. The chips are pretty well on point and stadiums should take note. The tartar sauce is some of the best and the coleslaw is great while being basic. The deco is akin to a dock located in a butcher shop and the yesteryear music can make the vibe clash. I will definitely go many more times but maybe not deviate often from breaded fish and may consume in a third location.
Fish tacos – a bit underwhelming. It’s a sauce issue.
Salmon and chips – Ideal.
Blackened salmon sandwich – A bit lacking and overwhelming. Can’t hardly hold it cleanly enough to be under-impressed with the flavors.
Smoked salmon bisque – perhaps too much smoked salmon and not enough bisque for some.
The owner was lovely to talk to and made us feel incredibly welcome. I was so impressed with my experience that I even bought a T-shirt (super soft and quality material, too).
I live 4 hours away and I can’t wait for the next time I come out this way. Honestly, I might even make up an excuse to visit again sooner! Highly recommend this hidden gem to anyone passing by or looking for an exceptional dining experience.
Order style: for here
Overall – 3.75 star fries for me – I will say all the fry styles are well balanced in flavor and not over seasoned which is great! I didn’t have a bad fry experience but I didn’t have one that makes me want to come back either. So a solid neutral or gets the job done
Regular Fries:
– they are salted, but it’s a small enough portion that it’s easy to get through without it getting too salty feeling
– texture is great. Even texture with all the fries. Fun mystery crunch layer
– the potato flavor is not super strong but it’s ok
– inner fluff is a little dryer than other fries we’ve had
– dips well
– i’d probably recommend the flavored fries over regular here, despite being a purist
– even after like 10 minutes of sitting under the fried fish the crisp was still there!
Fries covered in Clam Chowder:
– and also… Baked potato vibe on top. The chowder is underneath
– well seasoned, good balanced flavor, not too salty
– potato on potato fun
– obviously the texture is soggy so regulate your texture expectations
– requires a fork @ a certain point
– more fun when you get to the bottom with the ones covered in the cream sauce
Fries tossed in Smoked Garlic & Feta Cheese
– you can taste the sweetness of the smoked garlic
– the sauce isn’t in all fries so can be light or non existent depending on the fry
– well seasoned, not too salty
– due to the modest texture of the garlic sauce the crunchy texture is mostly in tact with most fries
– unique
– the sweetness throws me off but they are good
Salmon Piece: Interesting. I think it’s too dry of a fish for being fried. Fun to try but wouldn’t order again
Cod Piece: Moist, yummy, breading and this fish are best friends here. Would order this one again.
But nonetheless, this place is decidedly NOT the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. It wouldn’t even rank in the top 20 (and I haven’t been to many more than 20 fish and chips places)
The batter was good, but the fish that I got was mushy and weird tasting. They were also rather stingy with the fries as well. If I had been eating there, I may have asked what happened to the other half of my friends.
It’s sad though. I live close by, and would have loved to frequent this place. Alas, looks like it’s Sophie’s tacos for me!
