Looking for authentic Chinese food in LA?

Northern Cafe in DTLA is a Northern – style Dumpling House. Whether you get dumplings steamed or pan-fried, these delicate bite size treats with different fillings are a dim sum staple. We tried their Pork Soup Dumplings 小笼包, Steamed Lamb Dumplings  羊肉蒸饺 , Pork Bun 猪肉包子 and pan-fried Shrimp, Pork, Chive Dumplings 三鲜水饺煮/ 煎 All definite MUST-TRYS!!

They have a Dim Sum Menu that runs ALL DAY Saturday and Sunday. Smaller portions at great prices. You get to try more items that way.

The Downtown location has a bar with cocktails and 50% off Happy Hour! We tried the Golden Pear Mule and Jade Coconut Crush which are so pretty!!

We tried the Beef Spicy Dry Pot 香辣锅, which is essentially a dry version of hotpot. It is stir-fried with a flavorful, spicy sauce, potato fries, bok choy, tender beef and wood ear mushrooms. It had such bold, aromatic flavors! Paired with rice, addictively good!! A new favorite!!

Other menu items we tried:
BBQ Lamb Skewer 羊肉串
Beef Fried Noodle 牛肉炒面 (tender beef, great noodle texture and very flavorful)
BBQ Pork Bun 叉烧包
Black Sesame Tang Yuan 黑芝麻大汤圆 (these balls are in a liquid. The texture is like mochi and the middle is creamy and a little sweet)
Black & Gold Egg Yolk Bun 黑金流沙包 (could have more egg yolk filling)

Marcos was a great help with service and helpful suggestions.

Parking: $15 valet in the building near restaurant

People say this is the same as din tai fung but less money. So figured let’s try it out. Disappointed with a 33 minute wait for carry out and not being offered a water or suggested to have a seat. Then I saw someone else check their bag at pick up- Ì usually never check glad I did didn’t provide enough sauces as requested. Also no ginger :(. We live 9 minutes away and then parking and food was cold so had to reheat. The green beans are flavorless zero garlic taste and NOTHING like din tai fung. Chicken fried rice had no flavor the dumplings had soup which was nice compared to dtf, the meat was a odd texture and again no flavor even after attempting to doctor up the replica chilli oil and soy. The chicken chow mein saved the rating it had sauce so it gave it some flavor and it was full of chicken. I wouldn’t be back here I would actually prefer to spend the extra $40 for dtf.

If you’re craving Chinese food in downtown Los Angeles, this is a spot you won’t want to miss! The portions are generous—perfect for sharing—so you definitely get great value for your meal. We ordered the orange chicken and beef fried rice, and both were absolutely delicious.

One thing we truly appreciated was the relaxed atmosphere. There was no rush to clear our table after we finished eating, allowing us to sit and enjoy our time without feeling pressured to leave.

Our server, Hazel, was fantastic—attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed.

For excellent food, generous portions, and great service, this place is definitely worth a visit!

You gotta visit Northern Cafe for their comfort Chinese food right here in DTLA. Operating across from the metro station, it’s an easy access spot for dinner and date nights looking for great northern Chinese food.

There were a couple of great plant-based options that my friends and I shared. We tried their Veggie Rolls, Mapo Tofu, and their Veggie Steamed Dumplings. All of which were vegan by nature after we confirmed with the staff. Everything we had was top notch quality, filling, and tasty. I was a big fan of the rolls since I don’t see a veggie variant in a lot of Chinese restaurants.

The ambiance and service were all great so I have to give my props to Northern Cafe for giving us a wonderful dining experience.

Very new, modern and clean inside.
This Chinese restaurant is located right across the street from the Bloc in downtown Los Angeles. The parking is difficult and you certainly need to walk. It is a very nice decorated, new restaurant. However, the food was rather average. For example, I ordered a seafood fry rice. It was about 20 dollars. It had 7 pieces of tasteless shrimp and 6 pieces of very light flavored scallops. When it comes to the ” real crab meat ” it was very small pieces and equally tasteless. Plus, there were very little vegetables. I have to say, this Chinese dish was very average and the price was certainly above the average. I just have to try other dishes until they change my mind. I certainly will not order this kind of the fry rice again, so do you.

I am very happy to know that a nearby dimsum location has opened. The garlic green beans were very tasty. The xiao long bao (pork soup dumplings) were good, but I wish they came out a little bit hotter to maintain soupiness. The soup solidified about 5-10 min of sitting on the table. The Dan Dan noodles were really yummy and recommend. I also ordered the orange chicken, but would opt out of ordering it next time. Very cool ambiance with an Asian inspired cocktail menu. I ordered a Thai Mar Tea Ni. I will definitely be coming back to try more items on their menu. Convenient walk for me and hours are very convenient since they are open till 10.
