The Mexican food is fresh, flavorful, and consistently solid. Tacos are well-balanced with quality proteins, bright salsas, and warm tortillas, with generous portions that don’t feel sloppy. Everything tastes made-to-order, not rushed or overly Americanized.
Where this place really shines is the bar. The margaritas are excellent—strong, well-crafted, and not overly sweet—and the tequila and mezcal selection is impressive. And if you’re keeping it simple, the Pacifico is ice-cold and incredibly refreshing, exactly what you want with tacos.
The atmosphere is lively but not chaotic, making it great for both casual dinners and late-night drinks. Service is friendly and efficient, even when it’s busy, and the crowd is always a good mix of locals and visitors.
If you’re in North Beach and want reliable Mexican food, cold beer, and great cocktails in a fun setting, North Beach Cantina is a no-brainer. A true neighborhood staple.
It’s more of a bar-style setup, and like a lot of similar places, there’s kind of an unspoken expectation that you’ll grab a drink with your food. That said, the vibe here was friendly and relaxed, and the staff didn’t pressure me or make me feel out of place. The space itself is clean, welcoming, and has a local charm that made the whole experience enjoyable.
Would definitely come back next time I’m in town—especially to try more from the menu (and maybe a cocktail too).
We began our meal with chips and guacamole. The guacamole was fresh and nicely seasoned, while the chips were crisped to perfection. The salsa that accompanied them truly stole the spotlight: it was tangy, a little spicy, and very addictive. I regret not asking for its name, but it’s definitely something I’ll be coming back for. The horchata was a wonderful complement—creamy, with just the right amount of cinnamon, refreshing in the midst of all the savory flavors.
For our main courses, we shared the California Burrito and Street-Style Tacos. The burrito was just what you want when craving comfort: a generous portion filled with good carne asada, crispy fries, Pico de Gallo, and sour cream, hearty and satisfying. However, the tacos were the highlight. We ordered three, each filled with tender, well-marinated meat and topped simply with onions, cilantro, and lime. The simplicity allowed the quality of the ingredients to shine—no distractions, just pure flavor.
Some notable points that I think others will appreciate: the service was warm and not rushed, making it easy to settle in; the décor was polished yet relaxed, featuring wood tones, clean lines, and some fun murals, creating a welcoming atmosphere whether you’re with friends or dining solo. The menu also offered a nice variety—so even if you don’t want a big burrito, there are lighter options available. Additionally, the pricing seems reasonable considering the portion sizes, especially given the location.
A bit of background: North Beach Cantina opened in 2022, taking over the former Tacolicious space. The team behind it has restaurant experience throughout the Bay Area (including Underdogs Too, Underdogs Tres, and others).
Overall, North Beach Cantina is casual and unpretentious, demonstrating genuine care in both the food and atmosphere. We left feeling satisfied and full, and I’m already thinking about what I’ll try next time. If you’re in the area and craving good Mexican food in a relaxed setting, this is definitely one spot worth visiting. visiting.
10/10 ☺️
Tasty fish tacos with flavor bomb sauces!
Good music playing and good vibes.
A plate of nachos for $7 and their chips and Guac sampler also for $7. Their chips are actually homemade and super fire. Guac was great.
Nachos could use some more cheese but overall really solid. Great spot to hang out and talk and vibe.
The place is super clean, including the bathrooms. We had the Baja fish tacos and I was pleasantly surprised. Quality ingredients and a good presentation.
The fish was deep fried and was not greasy. I will go there again!
As a chef of 30 years if I was to ask one of my chef friends to make me a mission style burrito, I would expect something a bit nicer than a taqueria in the mission. I would expect more than one salsa with my chips, and a little something extra for flavor and texture. Well…….your mission style burrito kills it. I had three different sauces in my bag with the side of chips I purchased. Awesome! Burrito was killer, perfect.
I also wanted to thank the fabulous gentlemen at the bar for taking my order at the end of the day which I don’t recommend people do. He was fabulous and commentating. Excited to go back for dinner tonight.
While the drip coffee was disappointing, the chilaquiles with carne asada was not bad, but a bit too salty. The generous portion was easily enough for two people.
Despite the mediocre coffee, North Beach Cantina remains my go-to spot in SF for delicious burritos, fish tacos, and margaritas. It still deserves 5 stars.
