Ordered the potato croquettes for appetizer. Comes with 3 on top of Dijon style sauce.
Shared the brick chicken w polenta and greens. Chicken was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Delicious crispy skin.
Also ordered the lasagna per the chef’s recommendation bc we were craving a red sauce dish, it was yummy.
We also tried their version of an espresso martini. This felt more like a dessert drink but it was beautiful and balanced.
I left feeling full and satisfied.
I would def go back for a date night and/or a group of friends. The server said they just stayed brunch service on the weekends. They also have lots of gluten free options.
Atmosphere: Clean, calm, and inviting. Great for a date or small party dinner, but doesn’t feel cramped. Italian theme is well kept throughout, you can tell the opening of Nonnina’s was well planned.
Service: Pretty solid for the 2nd night they were open. Food came very quickly despite a small kitchen and server was attentive. I wouldn’t say over the top excellent, as it seemed there was still some inexperience amongst the staff, but that’ll get ironed out pretty quickly.
Food: We ordered The Fifth Course(excellent), Dolce Limone(excellent), La Citta Eterna(well balanced but slightly one note), and the Fico & Balsamic for drinks. For the Fico & Balsamic, you really need to love Balsamic. I love a good Mocktail, but I think my first real criticism is that many restaurants tend to add them to their menu without putting as much thought into them as they do Cocktails, and this time it shows. Balsamic is a strong flavor and fig is very subtle, so the balance is hard to strike, but without the added texture from a spirit, this drink fell very flat.
For apps we had the Croquette’s and The Cougar flatbread. Grandma’s Croquette’s were perfect and, in my opinion, great value. The Cougar was really very good as well, I just think the Pinsas should probably be priced a couple dollars less to fit in between apps & pastas more.
For our mains we ordered the Kale Caesar(excellent, fresh, and great value) and the Pappardelle. The pasta was very clearly homemade and of great quality. It was an enjoyable dish that I felt didn’t give each component its own room to be the star. Meaning, the pasta was great, but there was a lot piled on that distracted from it. Meanwhile, the Boar was tender and rich, but the flavor was slightly drowned out by the sauce. And the orange hazelnut crumble is a great idea, but gets over powered by the Boar, sauce, and pasta itself. There’s a perfect balance in there somewhere, and all the pieces are there and very tasty, but it’s just a tad off from being excellent.
We ordered the cannoli trio for dessert. While we enjoyed them, it was immediately noticeable that we weren’t getting an authentic Italian cannoli experience. Which is fine, but it’s still a little disappointing that a lot of Italian restaurants don’t want to take the risk of offering a fresh cannoli for dessert. I’m sure Nonnina’s doesn’t have the space to offer too many dessert options, so I don’t think I’ll ever truly be satisfied with this course here, but that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable.
Overall: Nonnina’s is a welcome new take on Italian cuisine that separates itself well from a traditional red sauce joint. It’s elevated, it’s creative, but there’s just a tiny sense of authenticity in the food that’s still to be desired. I will definitely be back, and I will recommend it to folks looking for Italian food, but I’ll probably be pretty selective with what I’d suggest from the menu. Either way, I’m looking forward to where this team takes things moving forward!
The food is excellent, the wait staff is excellent and works well together, and the food is top notch.
There is a separate bar area that does not interfere or interrupt the dining area. You can eat dinner at the bar.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND you make reservations/dine here.
