Super friendly staff.
Meat is falling of the bone, spicy but not overpowering.
The tomato soup dish (Egusi) is amazing.

Nneji is a restaurant with delicious food for takeout in Astoria, Queens.
I had egusi, which is made from a protein-rich seed. Egusi is one of my favorites, for sure. I also got black-eyed peas with sweet potato, black-peppered salmon, gari which is a coarse flour made from cassava, and the ancient grain fonio.
The food I ate had excellent flavor. It is definitely a place I will go back to.

My friends from elsewhere tried the place I recommend and totally agreed. The workers demonstrated real kindness. Workers make you feel welcome while assisting you. The meals contain surprising combinations that work harmoniously. I question the experience of those rating lower.

Delicious food and friendly staff! They took the time to talk about the dishes with me and gave recommendations. I had the chicken, jollof rice and okra! Loved them all. So flavourful without being overpowering. Wish they had tables and chairs so I can dine here with friends

The mixed meat jollof rice is so good and you get a HUGE portion. The restaurant is takeaway only and smells so nice inside.

Excited to have a new cultural addition to Astoria. Great selections of authentic west African foods. They even sell a selection of goods such as Black soap, Biltong (South African Jerky), and Shea butter, just to name a few. Great customer service and overall amazing experience, especially during these tough times

If it wasn’t normal to give a place with no obvious flaws a 5 star review, I might give it a 4, but I’ve had very little of this cuisine, so I will credit my four star like of the food to my ignorance. (TBH, it very well could be the very best example of the cuisine in NYC)
The place is a little hole in the wall, cooking mostly stews done in back and kept in a steam table for the very limited service hours. They love the food and are happy to talk about it and give samples to get you to understand what you’re getting, and work with you on mixed plates for one person. Amazingly they also prefer (!) card to cash, which is awesome to me.
As I said before. They’re stew specialists. Both normal (chicken) and interesting meats, as well as a bunch of vegan options that I, as a meat eater, have no issues eating and enjoying.
I’m not planning to go back weekly, but expect to be back about once a month. (oh, and they do a ton of good giving back stuff if you care about that. [I don’t] )

I got the okra+spinach w/ spicy goat. It was out of this world. The owner gave me a call a few minutes after I made the order to let me know they were out of fufu (pounded yams) and replaced it with yellow rice. I enjoyed the goat — it has a kick but not overwhelmingly spicy. The choice I made was excellent. I am most definitely ordering again and hope I can try the fufu next time.

Nneji is one of the spots that I will ALWAYS recommend to folks visiting my neighborhood. Beatrice and her fam make absolutely delicious Nigerian stews with great ingredients. They truly care about providing nourishing food at good prices. They also are incredibly welcoming, always down for good conversation about the food, about nutrition, about anything. Not only that, they consistently provide healthy meals for mutual aid efforts in the neighborhood. This spot is a total gem.
