The miso soup was good.
The fairy roll was great; more like a dessert.
The pink lady roll was good.
This place just became our favorite sushi restaurant.
We will be back again soon.
We have been loyal customers of Nikki Sushi for the past five years, starting at their original Progress Ridge location. Over the years, we’ve truly enjoyed the food and the friendly service. When the Reedville Crossing location opened in Hillsboro, much closer to our home, we were excited and have been dining there regularly since they opened. Until recently, both the food and service had been consistent.
Unfortunately, our last few visits have fallen short, and our most recent experience was especially disappointing.
Our server was OK, though not particularly personable. The first issue was that our main dishes were brought out at the same time as one of our appetizer, which was frustrating, all appetizers should come before the main course.
The bigger concern happened at the end of our meal. My son has ordered from the kids’ menu since we began coming to Nikki Sushi. He is now 14 (the menu states 10 and under), but it’s honestly the only way we can get him to join us for dinner there. He ordered the chicken katsu from the kids’ menu ($15.50) and a Coke, totaling $19.50. For what is essentially a small portion of rice and katsu, that price is not exactly inexpensive.
When I went to the cashier, I also had to address being overcharged for my beer. It was Ladies Night happy hour, and the beer should have been $4, not $8. While that was being corrected, we were told at that same moment that we would no longer be allowed to order from the kids’ menu.
The timing felt inappropriate and unnecessary. I was simply asking them to honor their posted happy hour price. Had there not been a discrepancy with the beer, this conversation about the kids’ menu would never have happened. It felt tacky and poorly handled, especially considering we are regular customers who have supported this restaurant for years and brought family and friends.
If the food had still been outstanding, we might have overlooked the service issues. Unfortunately, the quality has also declined compared to what we’ve experienced in the past.
This was disappointing for us as longtime regulars. We don’t just stop in occasionally,we’ve consistently supported this business. Sadly, this experience left a bad taste, and we won’t be returning. There are plenty of other restaurants that value loyal customers and handle situations like this with more care and respect.
For our service, we got seated quickly but it took 20 minutes for our order to be taken and then 45 minutes from that point to get our food and drinks. I’m not sure if they were just understaffed or the servers don’t know what they’re doing but we saw our food sitting on the counter for 10 minutes before it actually got served to our table. The food was all lukewarm by the time it got to our table.
As for the food, it would have been pretty decent if the food was actually served in a timely manner. I had a TNT roll, spicy tuna crispy rice, hamachi and unagi nigiri, and chicken karaage.
The TNT roll was better than I was expecting but the spicy tuna crispy rice was not crispy due to how long the food was sitting out for. The hamachi nigiri was also getting lukewarm from sitting out and the unagi was no longer hot by the time it came out. The cut of hamachi was just okay – I’ve had better from other restaurants for the same price.
My wife had the chirashi bowl but the fish was getting close to room temperature because of how long it was sitting out for.
Overall, it’s hard to recommend Nikki in its current state. The food is priced for $40-50ish per person for some nigiri, a roll, and maybe and appetizer and the food quality and service did not reflect this at all. I’ll come back in a few months to see if they’ve ironed some of this out.
The staff was so kind and attentive without ever feeling rushed. You can tell they really care about their guests and take pride in what they do. The atmosphere is inviting and modern, perfect for a date night or dinner with friends.
We’ve tried a lot of sushi spots in the area, and Nikki Sushi and Steak definitely stands out. Can’t wait to come back!
