I mostly have 5 star experiences.
I only do “hibachi.”
This most recent visit, I was a solo diner. I went for lunch yesterday.
They snuck me in at the end of a group because there was one seat left.
This group had not only already ordered, they were also done with their soup/ salad.
As soon as I was seated, I was asked which option I would like (as well as my drink order)….My soup never came by the way…
While my order was being taken, the chef pulled up with his cart.
So, not only did they forget my soup, I was also given LESS rice than everyone else- because I was truly an add on and was seated on the end. I feel like he “almost” forgot.
Because I sat down and was pretty much eating rice right away, considering, I had kind of forgotten about my appetizer (soup)…
At the end, I was the last diner, I explained that I needed an adjustment due to not getting my soup and the waitress was trying to send it with me to-go. Not only did I find that UNACCEPTABLE, unless I was okay with it (and I was not because I dined in for a reason), she felt that was the solution. I didn’t feel it was. They can’t assume my plans for a to-go box or if I have a microwave at home.
After too much deliberation and then of course speaking in their native language about the matter, I was not going to accept food prepared for me from the back because they were now a little upset that I wanted a small credit. I don’t trust accepting food that I can’t see being made, after a communication breakdown.
The waitress eventually said she would do a 10% discount.
I tipped 0.01 via my debit card, to prove my point.
She tried to get me to take the soup to-go 3x and if she had graciously did a small discount FOR FOOD I DIDN’T GET in the first place, I would had tipped (properly).
Please not that I also waited until my table had left before pointing out the forgotten appetizer because this was not about making a scene.
I have over 415k plus restaurant reviews. I rate a lot of places.
I am more likely to write about bad service, over “bad food.”
NOTE: wait to be seated WITH others, not after they’ve finished their appetizers. I’m sure that was the biggest difference in my experience.
I’ve been to this Japanese restaurant several times, and one thing we’ve always done is the share plate. It has always included the full meal—rice, veggies, and sides—just split between two people. We’ve never had an issue and it’s part of why we kept coming back.
But this time was completely different. When they started cooking, we were told that a share plate now only comes with rice and nothing else. No veggies, no extras. That was a big surprise, and honestly disappointing. If you’re going to change something customers are used to, it needs to be made very clear either on the menu or by the server when ordering. It’s not right to wait until the food is already cooking to tell people.
The food was still good, but the experience left a bad taste because of the lack of communication. I hope they improve the way they explain their new policy, because it makes a big difference in whether people want to return
