This place is a 8 out of 5! Had the pork dinner plate. Pork was delicious as was the slaw & green beans! No inside seating, but it was a nice day to eat at the covered picnic tables. I will not be able to make the trip from Raleigh to Greenville ever again without stopping here. Already trying to come up with a reason to head back that way!

I think it helps if you understand the Dennis family of E NC when you eat here, or at most other well established Q joints in E NC. That family started cooking BBQ in the early 1800’s. Bob Melton’s may have been the first commercial establishment, but the Dennis’s are the first family of E NC BBQ. (Pete Jones was a Dennis, in that he was part of the family too. Same for Sam, his grandson, up in Winterville.) I walk in for the first time, years ago — a service counter only, with canned drinks in an Igloo cooler full of ice. But the lunch takes its first leap forward when I’m offered collard greens as a side. Not the sharp, too-vinegary kind; the slightly sweet, slightly wild and delicious stuff. There are a couple of picnic table outside. It was a late lunch, and the staff soon came outside and sat down at the other picnic table. This is a black-run and black-owned place, one of several in NC. Then the second leap. We all start talking about other BBQ places. The conversation eventually drifts to Bum’s (Bum Dennis) in Ayden, where Skylight Inn also is located. They then re-told to me what probably was an often retold story for them. It seems that, at one point decades ago, Bum’s found itself staffed with mostly blacks. Some customers nudged Bum and told him they disapproved of the staffing. Bum told them he appreciated them as past customers and wished them luck in finding a new place to eat. The staff still revered that story. I re-tell it, first, so it doesn’t totally get lost in the swirl of time. But, also, to attempt to reveal the interconnectedness and contradictions in this part of the world. So, get up, get out, and go get some great BBQ at places like this. Become a part of a complex BBQ parade that’s been going on for a couple of hundred years and, I hope, will continue for at least a couple of hundred years more.

First time here today! Absolutely awesome food! I got BBQ, with boiled potatoes, and collards with hushpuppies!! Everything was great, and collards were best I’ve ever had! Want to try fish and chicken! Will definitely be back! Extremely nice folks! Highly recommend

Bought a BBQ sandwich and it was good. I’m giving a 3 star review because I haven’t tasted the sides or chicken yet. I’ll be back soon though!

Lovely, kind people and fantastic food! Fish was perfectly fried, light batter and not too salty. Potatoes and collards were excellent too. Make sure to stop here!

Food is good but being I do not eat pork they have other southern style meals that make up for that. Staff is friendly and service works hard to please customers. Truly is a down home cooking style for all to come visit if that is what is being sought out. If you love sweet lemonade come get some that will satisfy your taste buds. I love when I visit.

Little hole-in-the-wall. BBQ pulled pork was exceptionally good. They smoke their pork out back. Make their sides on premises with their own recipes. Everything is spiced and seasoned like my Grandmother did, fat back pork in everything. No indoor seating, they have a covered picnic table off to the side (classic!). Collards Fri Sat. What I saw was that most folks were taking their orders home. We sat out and enjoyed the ENC spring day on the picnic table. Fish sandwich for my wife – perfectly cooked. Flavorful. Rare gem hidden away in rural America..

I don’t like giving bad reviews. My husband and myself didn’t like this barbecue. The coleslaw was so bad. The bread stale.i usually give a second chance and go back to try it again. Not this time. It is a no for us. If this was the only barbecue here I would stop eating it.I am sticking with B’s barbecue!
