Eggroll – It tasted ok but odd. Mostly cabbage and ground meat. Soft and not crunchy at all. I don’t usually like eggrolls to begin with though I like spring rolls.
Spring roll – Very big. It tastes decent but is a bit oily inside and is about 95% cabbage and 5% carrot. Absolutely nothing else in it.
Boneless ribs – Good flavor but very dry and not charred.
Crab rangoons – Nice wontons but it’s literally plain cream cheese inside. No crab/krab whatsoever. Very disappointing.
Hawaiian fried rice – It tastes pretty good. Good amounts of various meats (chicken, ham, shrimp). Very little egg and onion.
Marco polo – It tastes very good. Tender ground pork. Not much of actual sauce though. Massive downside is it’s about 1.5 servings of lobster sauce with 4 servings of plain noodles. On the menu it says it’s on pork lo mein but it definitely wasn’t. $19, extremely expensive for plain noodles.
Duck sauce – Delicious, I want to drink it.
Hot mustard – Watery but doesn’t taste bad even with the hint of nail polish remover smell but in taste form. If you’re looking for an alternative to fire for your tongue this is it.
I probably wouldn’t go back for a long time seeing there is much better places for Chinese food but this place wasn’t nearly as bad as some I’ve been to.
However, here is our New Years experience:
My family placed two scheduled online orders for New Years Eve. The kitchen was swamped, and orders were not prepared in the order of pickup time (for example, people who ordered later sometimes got their food before people who ordered earlier). Our order was placed around 2 PM and scheduled for 6 PM, but it took until 7:44 PM to get all of our food. I was not able to obtain an estimated wait time and there is no system to notify when an order is ready, so I waited in the restaurant along with 6-10 or so other people at any one time. The staff clearly felt bad and the situation seemed helpless. I was glad to eventually get our food after the manager came out to expedite our orders.
I don’t blame the kitchen entirely. I think the issue is at a technology/managerial level. The computer system took way more orders than the kitchen had capacity for. If there is not capacity to make food by a scheduled time, the time should not be selectable by the customer. There was no system to provide appropriate estimates to customers, so people did not know how long to wait. Additionally, the kitchen was not receiving or processing orders in order of scheduled time. People who call in or walk in should not get their orders before people who scheduled orders that were overdue. I would describe the system as disorganized, and I think it needs improvement.
For example, you could measure the throughput of the kitchen to compute accurate order estimates. If the kitchen can produce X orders per hour, it would probably be a good idea to schedule X or fewer orders per hour. Phone and walk-in orders should also be scheduled in the same system as the online orders out of fairness to customers. Then, you’d somehow want to integrate that with the Door Dash orders too. This way you don’t have more orders in the system than the kitchen has capacity for, and people are given reasonable estimates.
I’m giving 4 stars because I think the food was good and tasted fresh, and out of consideration that New Years is likely their busiest day of the year. Still, if the system would be improved, it would be less stress on the customers and employees.
One of the few places left that stuff does dinner combo plates every day if the week. Love that. It’s the main reason we keep going back.
