Instead of ordering online, which I normally have done in past, I called to place my order. I asked questions, explained about problems with missing items in online orders ( which she had no response) and placed my order (which will be my last, sadly to say after 23 yrs). My order tonight was shrimp egg rolls, fried wontons, egg drop soup, chicken fried rice, and beef and mushrooms.
We ordered from here because the fried food never tastes greasy, it is always dry and tastes good. But the last few orders of wontons, yes dry, but wrappers taste stale. Like they were sitting for days. Strike 1.
Then the fried rice used to be very brown after being prepared. I guess with different “chefs”, different preparations. It just doesn’t look or taste the same. My husband had to “doctor” it up with all the packets we placed in bag. Strike 2.
Then I opened up the beef and mushrooms…or should they just label their entire menu beef and vegetables (see photo). Where are the mushrooms? I see cabbage, pea pods, carrots, oh…there is a mushroom! Really??? And no flavor at all. Strike 3.
All in, $35 for not satisfying food. Will not recommend or return again. Very disappointing.
We’ve eaten our way through a respectable number of Chinese restaurants in the area and definitely have a favorite. Unfortunately… they were closed. On a Monday. On Chinese New Year, no less. I guess I don’t blame them. So like modern adults, we panic-tapped Grubhub and hoped for the best.
Delivery was fast and easy — always appreciated on a hungry Monday night.
The food had flavor… just not a lot of it. You know when something looks great but tastes a bit different than expected? That.
Sesame chicken:
Dry and mild although it looked kind of how you’d want sesame chicken to look except without actual sesame seeds.
Bourbon chicken:
Smelled and looked promising and wasn’t bad — just lighter on flavor than we expected.
Mongolian beef:
A great dish if you love onions, which we do, but not too keen on the fact that there were way more onions than beef. The sauce just okay, not saying that it was but it kind of had a come from a can taste.
Vegetable Fried rice:
The darkest fried rice we’ve ever seen! Perfectly fine, just could’ve used a little more flavor. You picking up on the theme here?
Vegetable Lo mien:
Slightly overcooked, but actually the most flavorful item of the bunch.
Overall we didn’t hate it — it just felt like one of those meals that reminds you how much you love your usual spot. We probably won’t be regulars, but in a Monday night emergency, it definitely did the job.
If you’re looking for a place that serves up good food with care, New China House is it.
