I really wanted this spot to be good, but unfortunately my experience at New China Chef in Apex was very disappointing.
When I walked in, the lobby area appeared to be used more like a storage room than a dining space, which immediately gave a poor first impression. There were several employees standing around when I entered, almost as if they were just waiting for customers to show up.
The most surprising moment came when the employee at the counter told me the food was “just OK” and even suggested that I should eat it there so it wouldn’t get soggy on the way home. In hindsight, I probably should have taken that advice seriously.
The food itself did not deliver. The General Tso’s Chicken tasted like a watered-down version of the sauce you normally expect from this dish. By the time I got home from a short 7-minute drive, it was already soggy. We also ordered plain chicken wings, which were very bland and seemed like they might have been fried in old oil. The breading was uneven and inconsistent.
For $37.65, the quality just didn’t match the price. I considered calling back to give feedback, but it didn’t seem like there was any manager on duty.
It’s especially disappointing because this location is right next to Food Lion and the ABC store — usually a sign of a solid neighborhood Chinese takeout spot. Unfortunately, this one really missed the mark.

We ordered take out today from New China Chef, Apex. The items that we ordered were egg drop soup, teriyaki chicken, shrimp with mixed vegetables and chicken with cashew nuts. All the items were very tasty!! I would highly recommend this restaurant.

The Sesame Chicken tastes just like the General Tso’s chicken. The broccol/tofu in garlic was sweet with little garlic flavor. The vegetable fried rice was bland. The sauces were too sweet, when they should have been savory. It tasted like the same sauce was used for all three dishes. We expected better for what we paid.

1. I’m from NY so nothing will compare
2. They have an excellent sanitation score first and foremost. The inside of the restaurant is junky but it’s meant to be taken out (although I see lots of people dining in). The food is delicious so I keep returning; however, all of the sauces taste the same (chicken and broccoli, garlic sauce, sesame chicken, general tso chicken).. and if you order any combination plate they put WAY too much sauce over the food. my rice ends up being full of sauce if I order with chicken.
the lo mein is a bit dry but it’s tasty so I recommend they add more liquid to it. Pork fried rice is very good.
Overall they are in the top two Chinese food places I’ve tasted in NC and as long as they keep their sanitation score high I will forever be a frequent customer. Highly Recommend!

Not sure why they r getting less than 4.5. SOLID choice if looking for traditional NY style. We got boneless spareribs, wonton soup, chicken lomein, sesame chicken and pork fried rice and fried pork dumplings. All were GREAT!! new go to for Chinese!!!

Some of their food was delicious like the Generals Tso’s and Sweet and Sour Chicken. The Beef Ho Fun was all stuck together and the dumplings were extra crispy. The egg rolls and fried rice were good. Would definitely eat here again now knowing what items are good and what items aren’t that great.

So I order here weekly and and enjoy the dishes . When we first started coming here nice chunks of chicken and tender and moist. The orange beef was the same way tender and nice big pieces. Well this week my chicken were all little crumbs and mostly coating , this was same for the beef. Also both dishes were so chewy disappointing. I tried calling but after 3 tries no one picked up the phone. The chicken may look big in my photo but it was not , It was chicken and beef jerky with sauce . Planning on bringing them the food we did not eat to show them .
