NeMo Asian Fusion & Sushi Bar (@nemokeyport) · Keyport, NJ
Nemo sushi aisian restaurant | Keyport NJ – Facebook

I was a little apprehensive when I looked at the menu and saw they were boasting multiple Asian genres, including the aforementioned sushi but also some Thai, Chinese and Korean. (No, I didn’t realize it was Asian fusion, which would have immediately explained this.) In my experience, having TOO varied of a menu can blow up in a restaurant’s face, but regardless I came to try the sushi and went right to the special rolls. I opted for the Lover Roll and the Volcano Roll. The Volcano was okay for the most part – this was on me, but I didn’t realize it had jalapeno in it, which is clearly referenced in the menu. I don’t mind it from a taste perspective, but I hate the crunchy texture in a sushi roll (same with cucumber, which is a sushi dealbreaker for me). It was very easy to remove, and otherwise a perfectly fine roll. I think presentation value-wise it could use something since it basically looks like a pile of sawdust with the lobster salad on top, but it didn’t diminish the taste.
The Lover is excellent, and I wasn’t too surprised to catch multiple sightings of it on other plates as we were walking out. The optics on that one were very unique, a bifurcated heart shape with a heavy dose of predictable pinks and reds. I hadn’t really thought about it until now, but my sushi taste tends to go pretty savory with an emphasis on spicy tunas and wasabi mayo, that kind of thing. This is definitely on the sweeter side, which I’m assuming is primarily because of the honey. Regardless, it pairs really well with the rest of the ingredients. One of the better new sushi rolls I’ve tried recently, and it doesn’t seem like I’m in the minority on that one.
The service was very good; the Millennial Chum has been here before and said she’d had some issues on prior visits. Thankfully not a problem on this particular adventure – everyone had plans later in the evening and we were able to get in and out of here pretty quickly, probably within 40, 45 minutes or so. The price point wasn’t bad either. Admittedly I’m used to being gauged on the regular in Midtown Manhattan, but special rolls being around $15 are a treat in and of itself.
I’m not going to say that this is mouth-droppingly amazing sushi, but I think you have to grade on a slight curve in this area – Monmouth is pretty much a barren wasteland when it comes to its gastro offerings so when you find something decent, it’s worth noting. Nemo is worth noting.
Don’t get me wrong, the food tastes absolutely outstanding and the people and the hospitality are second to none. The problem is that you’ll notice the prices are relatively cheap for this day and age, and there is a reason for that…… because the portions you get are tiny.
They used to give you very generous portions, but the portions I received the last time I went there looked more like food rations. I mean it was barely enough to fill a cavity. Had I known, I would have ordered an egg roll or at least a little something as an appetizer, maybe some dumplings.
Will I go back again? Yes. But now I know to get an appetizer with my meal, otherwise you’re going to leave hungry.
Towards the end, the owner stopped by, was pleasant, and apologized for the delay, although it wasn’t necessary, as the food and service were, as always, spectacular.
This place is a staple in the central Jersey area and is a must-visit. The food is consistently good, and the service and genuineness of the staff are bar none! Oh, and by the way, it’s BYO.
We love the atmosphere, especially the outside deck, and the service and attention are fantastic!
When we got in the place was clean and seemed hospitable. We asked to sit outside and were told by the server that the tables were reserved and the wait would be an hour. No sweat we didn’t have reservations and this was the second place we tried with the same result. So we decided to stay and sit inside. We were close enough to have a view of the deck anyway.
We started with the Eel Salad. It was the best dish of the entire meal. The eel was prepared well and the sauce was a great balance between the vinegar and sweet flavors. We next had the chicken skewers. They were good. The sauce was sweet, some kind of Asian honey flavor. The mrs. ordered the Cashew Shrimp and I had 2 special rolls.
The sushi was beautifully presented. Taste was a 3.5 out of 5. The issue came with the shrimp dish. They forgot to put it in and we had to wait for them to prepare it. It was annoying but these things happen.
For the price of $75 it didn’t stand out but if you want some decent sushi and a great view of the harbor go check it out.
We all shared a bunch of appetizers. An avacado and peanut roll, some steamed dumplings and chicken tempora. The dumplings are fresh and the tempora was standard. The avacado roll was exceptional. It was surprisingly good. Not that I was concerned but how exciting could this be. Go there, try it and see what you think. I loved it.
Each of us ordered something different and I tried a bit of everything. The sushi rolls are always fresh. We had the Philadelphia Roll, which is always weird but these had a crisp freshness and the smoothness of the creme cheese added something to the clean taste. The spicy tuna was incredibly fresh and SPICY. It was a nice spicy.
The other plate was fried rice and shrimp. The shrimp had a sweetness to it and combined with the rice, made a delicious meal. Not interesting but tasty.
The pad Thai with shrimp was bland. The person ordered it that way. It was tasty not spicy and the person enjoyed it. I like my Thai food on fire.
My meal was killer. The Thai Pineapple Shrimp Chicken Fried Rice. I got it hair on fire hot. If you like hot Thai food, this dish was awesome. The freshness of the pineapple cooled off the spices. The chicken was tender and the shrimp was sweet. The combo of flavors and the intense Thai heat, amazing. The dish always comes mild. I hate mild so I asked for hair on fire hot. I was not disappointed.
Go to Nemo’s, enjoy the polite wait staff and the amazing food. It’s our destination place from now on.
