Stopped into Necessity Coffee looking for a non-coffee drink in the afternoon and ended up trying one of their sparkling teas — so unique and perfectly fall-inspired! The barista was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and patient with all my questions, which made the experience even better. The space had such a great vibe, and I can’t wait to come back and try one of their coffee drinks next time!

Love this place! Coffee is superb and the baristas really know their stuff. Special mention to the batch brew (especially if you like funkier co-ferment roasts, like me) and the sparkling tea (for those who don’t drink coffee).

Went to necessity at 9:30 on a Friday and it was pretty slammed with barely any standing room. Ordered a pastry and a matcha to go and went outside to try and find a seat to wait. There was construction next door adding to the noise. After hearing my friends drink get called (who ordered the same thing 5 mins after) I asked about mine. I was told by the barista that she threw it out because I took too long to pick it up. (Max 15 minutes?)
I apologized and said it was loud outside so I didn’t hear my name. She said she’d remake it. I went back outside as it was still crowded inside and watched through the window to make sure I didn’t miss it again. Another 15 minutes passed but no sign of my drink. Went back inside to wait, as there was no line anymore and I figured she’d gotten through the backlog of orders and could do mine. She made eye contact twice and started making new drinks for people who had just arrived. I waited another 30 minutes and never got my drink.
Wanted to enjoy this place but felt like a weird passive aggressive way to treat a customer? I would’ve just drank the latte if it had gotten cold, and no this isn’t a food safety issue considering it was 65 F out and milk can stay out for ~2 hours without spoiling.

Come for the coffee, stay for Jon, Curtis, & team.

Not only is this shop beautiful to look at, but the folks behind the bar are true masterminds and care so deeply about the drinks they make.

I love how experimental they are in their drink recipes and clearly aren’t afraid to try something new.

11/10 this is always on my recommendation list for coffee shops people need to try and love seeing more and more folks check it out. Yew!

Some great reviews . It’s a cute spot in the corner with some parking in the front . Was greeted warmly as we walked in . After perusing the menu – seems like they had a lot of interesting eccentric drinks . Didn’t really want anything with too much stuff going on so we got their drip Colombian coffee . They don’t have half and half at all ? Found that a little strange – barista was kind enough to put some milk into our coffee . Overall probably not my taste overall but the drip coffee was decent enough .

A very flavorful light bright espresso with strong notes of walnut, hazelnut and oat (it wasn’t the milk as I had it in a latte with a very mild coconut milk). Very complex and distinct. My only complaint is they don’t take cash.

The quality of their coffee is unsurpassed by anything I have had in Encinitas, let alone all of North County. The nicest people behind the counter and amazing owners! So much thought and care go into everything they serve. Their drink program is incredibly unique and constantly rotating, and their beans are often from niche farms that practice new and experimental processing techniques. Everything is consistently delicious. Necessity is IT!!!

Super cute, tiny coffee shop next to a pottery studio. There are only a few tables inside, and there are two large picnic tables and a few little seating spots out front. The staff were so sweet and friendly.

Outstanding coffee roaster Encinitas! Necessity Coffee knows how to roast and pour like a barista champion. There were three to four single origin beans for your espresso selection! And, they know how to dial them all in. There’s a decent amount of space to do remote work or read a book.

Our first time visiting Necessity and the vibes did not miss. The coffee was delightful and so was the service. The space is cute and tucked next to a beautiful pottery studio- the two coexist so seamlessly! It’s located in its own little cozy corner but worth the venture to such a treasure spot! Will definitely be back every time we’re in the area!
