We’re big fans of trying new spots and were genuinely excited to check this place out—especially since it was busy and people seemed to be enjoying their meals. But I’m honestly baffled. Are we all eating the same food here?
We started strong with the loaded nachos (sorry, I forgot the actual name, but you’ll know them—best thing we had all night). They were genuinely delicious and gave us hope. That hope was short-lived.
Then came the entrees—
1. Daughter’s meal: Chicken strips and fries – Totally fine. Nothing groundbreaking, but solid. Kid-approved.
2. My meal: Cheeseburger with cheese fries – I wish I were exaggerating, but the burger looked like it had been boiled. Like, cafeteria-style “somehow both gray and soggy” boiled. I couldn’t eat it.
3. Husband’s meal: Tom’s Chicken Fried Steak Special – Came with a special bonus ingredient: a hair embedded in the batter. They kindly remade it (thank you), but let’s be honest, the damage was done. The scalloped potatoes? More like potato chunks swimming in cheesy water. The corn tasted like it’d spent all day in a lukewarm spa bath. Zero flavor.
4. Daughter’s meal: the “pepper steak” – I’m using quotes here because what we got was more like a steamed hamburger patty with peppers and cheese inside. The baked potato was somehow both flavorless and confusing. The bacon? I have follow-up questions. Like, what was that?
Look, I get it. Some nights the kitchen’s off, or maybe short-staffed, or maybe the grill really was broken. But this felt like a prank. And yet—other tables were digging in like they were at a five-star spot. Are we on a hidden camera show?
The only highlight (besides the nachos) was our server. She was incredible, kind, and clearly doing her best despite the chaos. I didn’t have the heart to walk out on her, so yes—we paid $80 to eat nachos. Wild.
Wouldn’t return. But I’ll remember the nachos fondly.

Neal’s is a hospitable, country cooking restaurant located in the heart of the Hill Country (Concan to be specific). They have a full dining room because they offer comfort foods and delightful service.

Great food option while in Concan for the Frio! We had a large group (16 people) and service was fast and the food was delicious!
Highly recommend the chicken fried steak!
They also have Gluten Free burger buns, FYI.

This is a great restaurant that sits on the edge of the Frio River in Concan just outside Garner State part. The views of the river below are great. The food was great as well. It was extremely busy on the Sunday morning we were there but the service was fast and the food came out quickly. I highly recommend this place if you’re going to be in the area.

First time visiting Neal’s and it was incredible!! Started with chips and salsa. The salsa is homemade and had a kick to it! Very good! My kids shared a cheeseburger and fries and everything was eaten! I had the Swiss mushroom chicken with sautéed squash and potato salad. Tasty tasty tasty!! The sautéed squash was my favorite!! I wish I got two sides of just that! My husband had the special wish was brisket sandwich, baked beans, and potato salad! He ate everything!! He’s usually very picky and he loved his meal! The peach cobbler was the perfect ending to our meal! We live in Uvalde and will certainly be back!!

My husband and I came to eat here as it was our first time visiting this diner.
Prices are a bit pricey, I ain’t gonna lie.
The food was okay, tenders were a bit hard other than that food was good.
The waitress was really very nice and sweet.
Always checked to see if we needed anything else.
The scenery on the outside is breath taking, an eye for soar eyes.

Peaceful little restaurant with an amazing overlook of a river. Outdoor seating has three large picnic style tables under and there is an old friendly restaurant girl cat (so no dogs allowed on the patio). We were recommended the chicken fried steak and it did not disappoint! The portions were huge and the steak fried to perfection. I think it needed a pinch more salt, but that is my preference. Would visit again when I’m in the area!

We missed the breakfast, which we heard is the best part of their service. However, the lunch was better than expected and a solid meal the whole family enjoyed. Most lunch spots around the area open at 2 pm, so if you want a lunch before that time, this is your spot.
No adult beverages available.

Visited for the first time on 7-24-22 and ate Sunday lunch. YUM YUM YUM! No wonder it’s a Texas iconic place. The food was so so good. Staff was friendly and helpful. Waitress took our order correctly and we had our food within 15 minutes on a busy afternoon. Parking lot was full. We had to circle twice before finding a spot. Indoor or outdoor seating options. Beautiful view from restaurant. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. The fried chicken was amazing as were the dinner rolls. Family friendly atmosphere. Will definitely return. A+

First note: This restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol. You can BYOB or purchase an alcoholic beverage across the way though at Neal’s Backyard ($10 for a large Rita).
Don’t go here if you’re looking for a gourmet meal. The food was nothing special, and the quality vs price ratio is not the best but if you’re hungry it’ll do. Their appetizers are a pretty big portion size. I think this place is hyped up because of the outside seating and view, their customer service was quick and great too.
