This is going to be my last time at Nara Ramen downtown Boise. I used to eat ramen at this location and the one close to Town Square. I never had a bad experience, but this time I was very disappointed because we were charged an extra $6 for the spice. We had never experienced that before. The Spicy Miso also wasn’t spicy at all when my friend tried it, even though the menu indicated it should be a 3 on the spicy scale. She asked for it to be hotter, so she was charged an extra $4 total. I got tonkotsu ramen and asked for medium spicy. She charged $2 and gave us extra spicy on the side, charging us $2 more. We didn’t order that chili oil on the side and we thought she gave it to us for free. If anyone wants to try this place and you like spicy, bring your own chili; it’s better than paying $2 extra for each spice they add. And the service she never checked on the food at all. I don’t know if it’s the same owner for all the locations, but this location is lower star to me.

I’ve always gone to this place for ramen ,it used to be my go to spot. I ordered some tonight through Uber Eats, and as soon as I opened the meat container, the smell was awful. It honestly smelled like something rotten, to the point where I almost threw up. You can also see in the picture that the meat didn’t look fresh at all. This experience completely ruined ramen for me ):

I have been in to this Nara pretty frequently and the last 3 or 4 times I’ve had a pickup order it’s been disappointing, but this last time ESPECIALLY so. My coworker ordered a creme brulee milk tea and it was SOUR like something was spoiled. The chicken for my curry rice was bitter from being overcooked. The special instructions for sushi rolls got mixed up. I ordered the agedashi tofu and that was also disappointing. My coworker who went in to get a different drink for the order was told that management would be reaching out to me on this last Tuesday to sort something out, but I never received a call or anything. I ordered ramen the time before this and also was disappointed in the small amount of ingredients. They have also fully forgotten a roll in a previous pickup order. In the past I’ve really enjoyed ordering from here, especially the sushi, but I don’t think I will be coming back to this location anytime soon. I will say that I have come for dine-in seating and there is one server who is consistently genuinely lovely (and probably being overworked considering some other reviews here) but I just don’t think I’ll be back.

The restaurant is critically understaffed. This isn’t really a dig against them but the restaurant tends to prioritize mobile orders over in house customers. The poor hostess was also the only server, the bartender, the bus girl, and assistant to the sushi chef who couldn’t move from the single spot he was in as orders rolled in the entire time I was there. I waited at the front of the restaurant for about 15 minutes before I walked back to the sushi bar to see if someone could seat me. The server stopped packing the 2 dozen or so mobile orders to grab me a table. After I sat down she immediately took my order (which I already knew because I used to frequent the location near State and Chinden). While I waited for my ramen, a guest from another table had to walk up from the front of the restaurant to grab her attention again. To reiterate, this review is not against this poor girl in any way. She needs help! Some other staff are necessary if they want to keep this location open. I’m certain poor service is what has caused their other locations to shut down so the owners really need to prioritize having staff on the payroll who can support operations.

Nara is or at least was one of my favorite restaurants. I always get the exact same thing- The black garlic tonkotsu ramen. USUALLY it’s great. But on multiple occasions recently, especially when ordering to go, there’s pieces of burnt stuff in my ramen. It creates a bad texture and tastes charred. It’s very disappointing.

Checked out Nara Sushi in Boise recently. They have a couple locations but we ended up in downtown Boise. I love that they had both sushi & ramen. I tried the veggie roll and it was pretty standard but good. My sisters boyfriend tried the shrimp tempura roll and he said it was really good and held together pretty well considering how full it was. We ordered Ramen as well. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t have a vegetarian ramen, only a vegan ramen which actually cost more than the ramens filled with meat. The menu at some of the other Nara Sushi places said they had vegetarian ramen but when we asked our waitress she said she didn’t think the other locations had it either. So maybe their online menus aren’t updated. I didn’t care for the impossible meat added to this vegan ramen but everything else was pretty good. We also ordered the spicy beef ramen with mild heat and liked the heat level of this broth, but we didn’t care for the meat in this dish. We also ordered the spicy ramen with medium heat with chicken instead of pork. Medium heat was a tad on the spicy side but still good. Next time we probably will just get the mild spice level. Chicken was boiled in this dish so we didn’t love this meat option either, but that was likely just personal preference. Service was really great. The place itself is cute inside as well.

My friend and I both work downtown and decided to give this place a try. We went at 12:30pm on a Tuesday and it wasn’t busy for dine in. We ordered the jalepenos, a black dragon roll, and spicy miso Ramen. Everything was wonderful and very tasty. The coolest part was they brought the roll out with an egg shaped rock thing that had dry ice in it. You can kind of see that in the photo. It was such a great and fun way to present the food. We were super impressed! Anyway, give this place a try. Very reasonable prices also

Usually a great place and I eat here a lot! Service is great, Idaho roll is great, but recently there has been a lot of inconsistency with Nigiri sizing. It has gotten a lot smaller and almost more worth while to go to Whole Foods unfortunately or yoitomo. Usually great but recently a bummer

Horrible service, terrible food service as well. The fried tofu was soggy and wet in the middle, the chicken was severely overcooked and tasteless and hard as a rock. The server didnt bus the table once so we were constantly reshuffling our dishes so make room to eat. Not worth the price AT ALL.

My husband and I came in for dinner Friday night and had a very disappointing experience-a shock compared to the nara sushi in meridian!
We were greeted by an unkept server/host with a random baggy hoodie and messy hair held back with sunglasses. I didn’t even think she worked there until we were greeted.
We ordered calamari as an appetizer and 3 rolls. After one bite we knew the calamari had gone bad. When the waitress came back to give us our sushi rolls I let her know that the calamari had turned and was very fishy. Immediately she crossed her arms and stated “it’s supposed to be fishy”. We order calamari as an appetizer at every sushi joint- none have ever been this disgusting and fishy. She didn’t apologize, offer a new appetizer or offer to remove it from the bill- half a bite was taken from the dish. She left with an attitude and only checked in on us one other time before standing over my shoulder as I looked at the tip screen.
We will not be back as we have a bad taste in our mouths in more than one way!
