We sampled a nice cross-section of the menu, including Wonton Soup, Hot & Sour Soup, Pork Siu Mai, Wontons in Spicy Peanut Sauce, and of course the Nan Xiang Signature Pork Soup Dumplings (see photos).
Every dish was flavorful and well prepared, with the soup dumplings easily stealing the show.
My wife and I had just returned from New York City, where we enjoyed soup dumplings at one of the most famous spots around, so our expectations were high. Impressively, the dumplings here at Nan Xiang Express — right in North Carolina — were every bit as satisfying.
Ordering was done at the front kiosks, and from that point on the service was excellent. The staff was friendly and welcoming throughout, with plenty of smiling faces that made the experience even more enjoyable.
We’re very much looking forward to coming back to explore more of the menu, and we’re also excited to try the brand-new location that just opened in Raleigh. Highly recommended.
They also offer an impressive variety of boba teas. Whether you like fruity, creamy, or refreshing drinks, there is something for everyone and choosing just one is the hardest part.
The service is quick and efficient, which makes this a great spot for a fast lunch or a treat after a long day. Nan Xiang Express is definitely becoming one of my favorite places to eat in Durham. Highly recommend!
✅️ The sesame chicken bowl tasted like frozen chicken thrown into an air fryer, with just three pieces of broccoli and dry rice on the side — all for $15. It felt extremely underwhelming for the price.
✅️ If I had to pick one dish that was at least acceptable, it would be the braised beef noodle soup. Beef was soft and tender and the portion was large.
✅️ The pork dumplings were also not good. Trader Joe’s frozen dumplings that I make at home taste better.
Overall, the food quality did not match the price at all.
The pork filling has also lost its charm. It tastes overcooked, oddly uniform, and almost mechanical, as if it came from a dumpling factory assembly line. The crab roe version was supposed to be the star, yet it offered barely a hint of crab essence and suffered from the same overcooked texture. Disappointing all around.
Another thing that bothered me was how sweet the vinegar was. It tasted like someone pumped sugar water into the vinegar, diluting the fat cutting contrast. It would also be nice to compliment it with raw thinly sliced ginger too…
The saving grace of this visit was the drinks. My muscat slush was delightful, refreshing, and perfectly complemented by the milk and cheese foam. That part was genuinely enjoyable and probably the only reason this review isn’t harsher.
Nanxiang Express, please get your act together. Your soup dumplings used to be worth the hype, and I’d love to believe they can be again.
self order at a machine, pick up your table number and wait to have it delivered. simple.
they have dumplings, some appetizers and boba.
the dumplings were great, the shrimp spring roll was low on shrimp and under fried in my opinion
other than that cute new place.
edit
went back twice, food the second time AMAZING, the third time we ordered the same exact things and it was cooked completely differently and disappointingly .the scallion pancake for example had way less meat than the time before and was raw in the middle of the dough …the pot stickers not crispy
lowering one star for standard ..
I do really like the visual effects,I wish they would keep them on versus the music artist picture on the big screen
