Namsan Tonkatsu opened not long ago, and I had seen a lot of mixed reviews before coming in. I went for Friday lunch and the place was actually pretty busy, but our food came out very quickly, which was a nice surprise. We sat near the door and every time it opened it got pretty cold, which was the only downside during our visit.

I ordered both the cheese tonkatsu and the spicy one, and I personally liked the spicy one more. They give you pepper as a side dish, which pairs well with the tonkatsu. The soup that was served first wasn’t too bad, and the soondubu was also decent. Overall, a solid meal with fast service—worth checking out despite some minor comfort issues.

I visited the new Namsan Donkatsu in Palisades Park after seeing it all over Threads. The restaurant does a decent job recreating the old-school Korean diner-style pork cutlet you’d typically see in retro cafés in Korea.

The meal starts with a thick, slightly sweet cream soup that feels very nostalgic. The main plate comes with rice, macaroni, cabbage salad topped with ketchup and mayo, pickled radish, and a fresh green chili pepper. Since the dishes are on the sweeter and heavier side, the chili pepper actually helped cut through the richness and kept the meal from feeling overwhelming.

The sauce is a thin brown demi-glace rather than the tangier, modern Korean cutlet sauce. The pork cutlet itself was crispy for the first few bites, but the bottom breading separated and became soggy fairly quickly, which made the dish feel heavier as I continued eating. I also tried the fish cutlet, but the staff couldn’t tell me what type of fish it was because the manager wasn’t in that day.

Prices are $20 for the half-and-half combo and $23 for the full set. Not inexpensive, but the portions are generous. They also serve kimchi stew and soft tofu stew for $10, and many tables ordered one to share—which makes sense given the fried and sweet nature of the main dishes.

The restaurant was colder than expected due to drafts from the door, but service was friendly and reasonably fast. Overall, there are some areas that could be improved, but places specializing in this nostalgic style are rare in the NYC/NJ area. I might return on a day when I’m specifically craving this kind of retro pork cutlet.

Here we go again! Another Donkatsu place??? There are so many bunsik places trying it and never leave a name and actual Donkatsu places in the area. This one however, will be remembered and put it’s root down!
Walked in and I was very low on sugar. Whispered to server asking for sweet Radish as I was diabetic and experiencing low sugar. The server repsonded immediately and brought me a dish of sweet Radish and emergency averted!! I don’t think he even realized that he averted an emergency and just acted quickly as if he’ve done this before! Thank you!
Placed the order and enjoyed variety of accompaniments including the nostalgic cream soup and it was like going back 53 years with memories of Korea. They are doing everything perfectly so far. Didn’t even realize the time passing as I was into my second offering of cream soup which I didn’t even have to ask for. He realized that I was enjoying it so much and just offered me another one. Talk about attentive service. Then the server came back to ask if we ordered the food which we did, as matter of fact, to that same server. Obviously the order never made it to the kitchen. The manager came over and apologized profusely and promised they will put a rush in and offered complimentary beverage in lieu and told her it wasn’t necessary and then she doubled down by offering she will not charge for gimbob which I also told her that will not be necessary but she did take it off the bill. They were quite busy when we arrived and it was understandable mistake and we did not raise any issues with it. They discovered the error and reacted in very responsible manner all on their own wich was great recovery. They deserved repeat business regardless the error just on how they handled it. Now the food! Everything was on the dime and we left feeling full, we’ll served and satisfied pallet and can’t wait to come back again!! This was one of the first in a long time I would say they scored TRIPLE CROWN! Thank you Namsan Donkatsu!

We went here a few days ago not knowing it was their first day opening. As you can see the menu is simple and neat. I have been craving tonkatsu for a while. I ordered the original donkatsu and my friend had the chicken katsu. We also ordered a kimchi jjigae too.
Before our food came out we were given some korean peppers with ssamjang and corn soup! like the ones they give in korea~ I haven’t had it in so long~ So good!
The katsus were perfectly crispy and the portion size is generous. I loved the sauce!! I wanted more. And the kimchi jjigae was on point.
The manager and servers were kind. I’ll probably get my donkatsu fix here from now on. I want to try the spicy donkatsu too!

If you’ve watched Moving or Running Man, you’ve probably heard of Namsan Donkatsu. This new Palisades Park location completely lives up to the hype, even if I’m not sure it’s the exact same chain. I got the combo platter, and the pork katsu was legendary—super tender, not too greasy, and magical with their sweet sauce. The kimchi stew was also fantastic for a cold day. The only letdown was the Namsan kimbab, which had really mushy rice. Fast service, really friendly staff, a cash discount, and they deliver via Uber Eats/DoorDash. I’ll definitely be back!

I went there with a group of 8 people. The entire place was packed and no empty tables. Our food came out within 10-15 mins. We got regular donkatsu, combo, spicy donkatsu, udon and Soondubu. The donkatsu breading is so light and crispy, and the sauce is so delicious. My friends kept talking about the sauce, and my husband is already asking me to go back for some more!!
