Reviews
The Food – The portions here are massive. We ordered 2 dosas for 3 adults, and it was more than enough.
• Mysore Masala Dosa: Classic, flavorful, and perfectly executed.
• Mylapore Special Dosa: This was the standout. It’s unique and packs a punch—I’d rate it a solid 8/10 on the spice scale. If you like a spicy kick, this is the one to get.
The Game Changer: Vegan Chai ☕
This is the only place in the Bay Area I’ve found that serves a truly great vegan chai. They use Oatly oat milk, and honestly, we loved it the most out of everything we ordered. It’s creamy, spiced right, and a total rarity for plant-based diners in the area. They serve it with jaggery and it’s wonderful.
Service & Ambiance
• The Vibe: Great ambiance that makes it feel like a nice night out rather than just a quick meal.
• The Staff: Incredible service (10/10). The team was so friendly and proactively checked on us to see if we needed extra chutney or sides without us even having to ask.
Verdict: I’ll definitely be back—mostly for that Mylapore dosa and a round of vegan chai!
Thatte idli :7/10. Idli was a little on the dryer side but podi was good
Mysore masala dosa: 6/10. Masala was the only good part
Uttapam:8/1
Filter coffee : 9/10
The ambience and decor is perfect. It is a 10/10. Entering the restaurant is nostalgic to any South Indian. It feels like you are entering a rustic South Indian household.
The Ratna cafe idly sambar and Medhu Vada (also sold at idly express) was consistent.
“Mylapore stands apart from Idly express for the variety of Dosas and dine in experience” mentioned an employee. However, the Mysore Masala Dosa was a huge let down and the service was mediocre at best. Bangalore/Mysore style dosas are supposed to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My dosa was instead rubbery in texture.
Considering the ridiculous wait times and the kitchen potentially overwhelmed (which shows in the below average food), I recommend their less busy locations like Idly express Mountain View.
If you are visiting this restaurant during their busy hours, I recommend adding your name to the waitlist on yelp. Caution: there is limited parking.
This restaurant is ideally located right on El Camino in Sunnyvale, and I recently learned that this is their own standalone location, the first of what could be many more to come.
Parking:
The location used to be an Italian restaurant and probably an older style building with the parking lot on the smaller side. There is no wrap around parking exit available and it’s one way in and one way out. During peak hours, this can pose a challenge. The staff do their best to manage the flow and keep spaces available for diners. I recommend carpooling or taking a rideshare (Uber/Lyft) during busy periods for a stress-free experience. They are in the process of adding few more spots. For a more hassle free experience, park a block up at at the shopping complex (with Apna Mandi). Street parking is also available.
Ambiance:
The interior is tastefully designed in a classic South Indian style, which gives it an authentic and welcoming vibe. The restaurant is still undergoing renovations following the conversion, so expect the ambiance to evolve in the near future and in a good way.
️ Service:
We came as a group of 11 and were seated promptly, though it was after the peak rush hour. There’s plenty of seating, and the service is impressively quick. The staff, led by Yathu, did a fantastic job taking care of our group. They were attentive, flexible with additional requests, and eager to ensure we were fully satisfied. If something isn’t right, they genuinely want to fix it on the spot, which is refreshing.
Restrooms:
The restrooms are clean and functional for both kids and adults. Renovations are expected soon, which should further make it refreshing and contemporary.
Food Quality:
Expect authentic flavors and generous portions. We tried the thali, dosas coffee and vadais which were all well-balanced and flavorful, and the Kesari on the side of thali was exceptional; a sweet highlight that stood out. I do think the ghee was generous but the cashews were hidden or missing. (FEEDBACK provided while I was leaving the restaurant)
Overall: This is a promising new entrant to the Sunnyvale food scene, with excellent service, authentic flavors, and a convenient location. There are a few growing pains as they complete renovations, but it’s absolutely worth a visit especially for South Indian cuisine lovers.
Mylapore maintains its high standards here. Patrons need to exercise patience for the parking situation in the interim.
