Donkey and I recently visited Musashi Sushi in Taman Melodies, Johor Bahru, a spot that’s quickly become known as a ‘hidden gem’ for authentic Japanese food without breaking the bank.
We went on January 17, 2026, at around 8:17 pm. We ordered Hiyashi Ramen (cold ramen), Garlic Chahan (garlic fried rice), five pieces of Salmon Sashimi, Charcoal Ebi Tempura, and Saba (grilled mackerel with yakitori sauce). Donkey also treated himself to a glass of Dewar’s 8 Year Old whisky.
We’d been looking for a new place to try, and Donkey remembered seeing Musashi Sushi marked on Google Maps. He’d been wanting to take me there for a while, as he was really intrigued by the reviews and the overall vibe. It’s an easy 10-minute walk from the KSL Hotel, and the location is hard to miss. There’s a huge balloon Maneki Neko (fortune cat) right outside the entrance, which is super eye-catching. Inside, they even have a tatami seating area. When we walked in, the place was buzzing. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait and were seated right away at the sushi bar counter.
At first glance, the prices on the menu seemed a bit high. But, after taking a closer look, we realized they were actually quite reasonable. Donkey went for the Hiyashi Ramen. Unlike the simple cold soba noodles you usually get in Singapore, this one came with a ton of side dishes. I’m a huge garlic fried rice fan, so I had to try the Garlic Chahan. I absolutely loved it! The flavor was amazing, and I ended up eating the whole thing, which is rare for me. We debated about the salmon sashimi, but ultimately decided on the five-piece portion. It seemed a bit pricey at first, but when it arrived, the sashimi pieces were huge, and topped with caviar – totally worth it! We were also really curious about the Charcoal Ebi Tempura, which was coated in something black that we couldn’t quite identify. It came with a mayonnaise dip topped with fish roe, which was a perfect complement. Finally, we ordered the Saba grilled fish. Next time, I’m going to try the salted Saba, as I’m not a huge fan of yakitori sauce. But, even with the yakitori sauce, the fish was incredibly fresh and tasty. Donkey also ordered a highball, which was only RM22 – you can’t find prices like that in Singapore! It was garnished with a salted plum and a slice of lemon, and the flavor was spot on.
Overall, we were extremely impressed with the atmosphere, service, and food at Musashi Sushi. It was a fantastic dining experience, and we’d definitely recommend it to any friends visiting Johor Bahru who appreciate good Japanese cuisine.
Google Rating:
Food: 5/5 (Hiyashi Ramen, Garlic Chahan, Salmon Sashimi, Charcoal Ebi Tempura, Saba) – Each dish was flavorful and well-prepared. The sashimi was generously sized, and the Garlic Chahan was a standout.
Atmosphere: 5/5 – Lively atmosphere with a tatami seating area and a sushi bar.
Service: 5/5 – Excellent service.
Overall: 5/5 – A JB hidden gem worth discovering. Highly recommended!
What we ordered:
• Hiyashi Ramen (cold noodles): gorgeous presentation with a “9-grid” of toppings, flavorful and refreshing — a must order
• Mixed Chopped Sashimi Don: generous toppings, great balance
• Salmon Sashimi Don: thick, fresh slices — salmon lovers rejoice
• Ebi Avocado Maki: surprisingly good, topped with bright roe that makes it hard to eat because it’s so pretty
• Yasai Niso Nabe: comforting veggie hotpot with a sukiyaki-like broth
Interior is cozy and full of Japanese vibes. Highly recommend for good food + good mood. Saving this for my next JB trip!
To begin with, the salmon dishes were a standout highlight of the night. The fresh salmon sashimi was beautifully sliced with a delicate texture and vibrant colour that immediately reflected its freshness. Each bite was rich, buttery, and full of natural flavour, showcasing the chef’s expertise in selecting premium ingredients. The grilled salmon fish head was equally impressive. Perfectly seasoned and grilled to a slight crisp on the outside while remaining juicy and tender inside, it offered a wonderful balance of smoky aroma and savoury depth. This dish clearly demonstrated the kitchen’s skill in preparing traditional Japanese comfort dishes with finesse and precision.
The charcoal tempura was another memorable component of the meal. The deep-black tempura batter gave the dish a unique visual identity while maintaining a light and crunchy texture. It was fried to perfection—crisp on the outside without being oily, and the ingredients inside retained their natural flavours and moisture. The contrast between the charcoal-infused coating and the fresh ingredients made it both visually striking and deliciously satisfying. It is certainly a dish I would return for again.
To complement the food, I enjoyed a Sapporo craft beer and a Dewar’s Extra Smooth Highball. The Sapporo craft beer was refreshing with a clean finish, pairing wonderfully with the richer flavours of the grilled salmon and tempura. Meanwhile, the Dewar’s Extra Smooth Highball provided a crisp, balanced drink with gentle whisky notes that enhanced the overall dining experience without overpowering the food. Both beverages were served chilled and presented well, adding to the enjoyment of the evening.
Beyond the food and drinks, the service at Musashi Sushi deserves special praise. The staff were polite, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. They ensured that the dishes were served promptly and checked in at the right moments without being intrusive. Their welcoming attitude created a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere throughout the meal. The restaurant’s clean environment and cozy Japanese-inspired ambience further enhanced the overall experience.
In summary, my dinner at Musashi Sushi Johor Bahru on 9 December 2025 was exceptional in every aspect. The fresh and flavourful dishes, excellent drinks, and gracious hospitality came together to deliver a thoroughly enjoyable evening. I truly appreciate the effort and dedication shown by the entire team, and I look forward to returning soon. Keep up the excellent work!
It was my first time trying cold noodles at a Japanese restaurant, and I was truly impressed by how refreshing and delicious they were. Musashi Sushi offers a wide variety of Japanese dishes — from Don and sushi to ramen, sukiyaki hot pot, fried rice, and more. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, and the portions were generous for the price.
Overall, this place exceeded my expectations with its quality, atmosphere, and value. I’ll definitely be back for another visit soon!
The service is normal as the food ordering are using system. Waiter will come to you when food is served.
Portion of food is fairly good and the sashimi are fresh.
Worth to do a revisit and try other foods that we have miss this round.

Kitty and I had been seeking a place for dinner, and I recalled a Japanese restaurant marked on Google Maps that I had been meaning to take Kitty to for some time. I was intrigued by the reviews on Google and the atmosphere of the restaurant. We walked here from the KSL Hotel, which is a ten-minute walk, and the location was easy to find, as it is quite vibrant, and there is a large balloon Maneki Neko, fortune cat, just outside the entrance, which is easily visible. Upon entering, there is a tatami seating area. When we entered the restaurant, it was very lively. Fortunately, there was no queue or waiting list, and we were shown to the bar counter and seated at the sushi bar.
Initially, when we perused the menu, we were taken aback as the prices appeared rather high at first glance. However, upon further inspection, we found the prices to be quite reasonable. I opted for the Hiyashi Ramen. Typically, in Singapore, cold ramen consists solely of cold soba noodles, yet here, it included a generous array of side dishes. Kitty, a devoted fan of garlic fried rice, ordered the Garlic Chahan, and she was delighted with its flavour, remarking that it was very enjoyable. She managed to consume the entire portion, whereas she would usually only manage half. We deliberated over ordering the salmon sashimi, and ultimately decided on the five piece portion. Initially, Kitty considered the salmon sashimi to be somewhat expensive. However, upon its arrival, the sashimi pieces were notably large, which we deemed to be well worth the price. The sashimi was also adorned with caviar. We were also intrigued by the Charcoal Ebi Tempura, which had a striking black appearance, and we were uncertain as to what coating it was prepared with. The Charcoal Ebi Tempura was accompanied by a mayonnaise dip with fish roe. Dipping the Charcoal Ebi Tempura into the mayonnaise with the fish roe yielded a delightful flavour. We also ordered the Saba grilled fish. Kitty stated that upon our next visit, she would order the salted Saba fish rather than the one with yakitori sauce, as she is not particularly fond of yakitori sauce. However, she still enjoyed it, as the fish was very fresh and tasty, and it complemented the yakitori sauce well. We also ordered a highball, priced at only RM22, whereas highballs in Singapore typically cost at least $15. The highball was garnished with a salted plum and a slice of lemon. The overall flavour of the highball was perfect. Overall, we were very pleased with the ambience, the service, and the cuisine. It was a truly enjoyable experience, and we would certainly recommend this establishment to our friends who appreciate Japanese cuisine should they find themselves in the vicinity.
