Broth was just ok really lacked the flavor and depth that we like to have in our ramen. We had the black garlic, salmon miso(Togo) curry based one. The least favorite was the curry based one it was too sweet. The black garlic one was just ok and the salmon miso was probably the best. Also had the Calamari and that was pretty bland and the pot stickers were just mediocre.

The chashu pork that they make from Carlton Farms pork is the best I’ve ever had at any ramen place and possibly in my entire life. It’s a whole steak and the marbling is incredible. My favorite is the black garlic ramen. My biggest gripe is their space is extremely small and they cram you where you fit. The first time I went, I sat right next to the door in the middle of winter. The second time, they sat me thigh to thigh with another customer who was clearly tweaking. There is little expectation of privacy at this location. Some people love the very open European style dining. I respect that, but I don’t.

I’m not a big fan of Ramen restaurants as they have not had a great menu selection for me. This changed at Mugen. What a gem this is. I’m a huge curry fan and their curry chicken dish was excellent, could eat everyday! Nancy ordered a Tofu dish and was equally impressed, best she has had!

The curry was the best part of the meal, accompanied by some delicious chicken karage. I was NOT impressed with the ramen; especially the exorbitantly priced extra egg. It really seemed like they were cutting hard corners with contemporary high egg prices. I imagine the kitchen staff are as inattentive and lackadaisical as their wait staff. The kicker was that our tasty Thai iced coffees were $7 a piece (admittedly comparable to Starbucks prices, but still an outrageous bail in the coffin to my bad experience here.)

The ika (deep fried octopus) salad was wonderful. I would order it every time. The noodle is thick, my personal preference. The pork was chargrilled perfectly, enhancing its flavor. The broth was excellent & spice level was perfect. 2 thumbs up!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this restaurant!! Phenomenal food and fantastic staff. My partner and I drive all the way out from West of Portland to hike and enjoy this food. We decided to celebrate our wedding here and had such a great experience. They accommodated our group and special requests. THANK YOU, Pat Mugen and your wondering staff for making our day so special. We felt like part of the family and will be back as often as possible

Got the Black Garlic dish with chicken. It was FULL of flavor and felt refreshing after an equally amazing hike. Service was top notch. The server touched our table often and had a pleasant and welcoming demeanor. The outdoor seating with a great view only put a cherry on top of the entire experience.
Will definitely come again and would absolutely recommend. ❤️

Great food and excellent service. I came pretty close to closing and they still sat me, never made me feel rushed and told me to take my time. I’ve been to a few spots in downtown where I was told they were no longer seating despite their posted business hours, so this was greatly appreciated and excellent service. That alone will keep me coming back. If it’s your first time, my warning would be that medium spice is pretty hot (in my opinion).

I would rate their duck one of the best across the united state, very tendering, well braised making it rich in flavor with right amount of salt. The ramen soup was duck based and makes a rich and unique taste. Even better than some of the Michelin restaurants which makes duck dishes…

The noodles in the ramen were good, the chicken and the pork were both really good. I wasn’t blown away by the broth but it definitely wasn’t bad broth either. Crab Rangoon is worth getting and the Thai iced tea is good too
