Calico Cupboard – Mount Vernon
We had breakfast here this morning and it was fantastic! I ordered the bacon eggs benedict and it was absolutely delicious. The service was friendly, attentive, and welcoming from start to finish. We dined in and even though there was a short wait, it moved quickly and was well worth it.
The ambiance is cozy and charming, and I was impressed by how many options they have. I didn’t try anything from the bakery this time, but I snapped a few photos — everything looked incredible with so many tempting choices. I’ll definitely be back to try some of those!
Highly recommend Calico Cupboard for a great breakfast and overall excellent experience.
The service was very strange. From the moment we arrived it was hard to find someone to serve us or figure out the wait time? When we finally got sat we got our drink orders taken and weren’t brought waters or the right amount of silverware. The drinks weren’t good, the Bloody Mary was really not tasty!! We asked if we could put our food order in and she said no.
When our actual server came (our third server) to take food orders she didn’t seem knowledgeable on the menu or was able to give us insights on our questions… to be fair the menu is 100 items at least so it’s ok.
the food came out before our drinks which wasn’t my favorite, and the food was not tasty at all… lacking flavor and taste and honestly, no one was happy with it. The food was flavorless, they forgot the bacon on my sandwich, the chile verde tasted like relish, and my friend’s hollandaise sauce was straight up neon yellow.
Again. This is where I might take my grandparents if they wanted eggs and potatoes that taste like milk and nothing. But this is never where I would go.
Also we found a mite in the salt.
I ordered the Bacon Lettuce Tomato Avocado
My child ordered the cinnamon roll from the Kids Menu, and it was the regular full size cinnamon roll! I thought it was going to be a smaller portion but it was not. LOL
First of our server was friendly and generous with the coffee. Our cups were never empty. The restaurant was busy and our server had a good sized area to cover. I noticed she was able to serve everyone efficiently and spent time chatting with everyone. Love this!
The food was fine. Nothing amazing. Not the best breakfast I have ever had. I was not expecting that. Portions were generous and looked appealing when we were served. My wife mentioned her eggs were a bit too runny for her preference. My omelet was very good.
The restaurant is loud. Personally I find it difficult to hear when my wife is talking in a loud restaurant. This may not be an issue for you. The decor is nice and I like the exposed brick walls.
The bakery case looks great. We picked up a couple of items to go.
When I walked inside I found a sign over a book that asked diners to sign in.
Shortly after I signed in a hostess walked up and led me to a table that was under a skylight. The hostess handed a menu to me and took my drink order. I asked for an “Arnold Palmer” and was surprised when I took a sip and tasted peaches. It would seem that Peach tea was used.
Shortly after, a server walked up to take my order. I selected the Pulled Pork Hash w/2 fried eggs on top. I asked for over-easy eggs, but got over-medium. Oh well, it was still delicious!
For dessert I asked for a slice of Peanut Butter Pie to go.
Overall I was very pleased with my decision to eat at Calico Cupboard. The staff was pleasant and professional. The food was plentiful and delicious.
I am writing as a longtime and loyal customer of The Calico Cupboard. Over the years, I have visited all three locations and have consistently had wonderful experiences at both the Anacortes and La Conner restaurants. Because of that history, I felt confident recommending Calico Cupboard to my family and fiancé.
Yesterday, I visited the Mt. Vernon location for the first time in roughly ten years to pick up treats for my family, and unfortunately the experience was deeply disappointing.
The restaurant felt chaotic, understaffed, and poorly organized. I have over 20 years of experience in the restaurant and service industry, and it was very apparent that the staff was overwhelmed, disengaged, and not working as a team. Servers appeared lost, customers were visibly frustrated, and there was little sense of leadership or coordination on the floor. The overall atmosphere reflected exhaustion and low morale rather than pride in the business.
We purchased two cinnamon rolls, two snickerdoodles, and one gingerbread man, for a total of approximately $40. The employee who assisted us was short and unpleasant in tone, and our items were packaged with little care. This was especially frustrating as I had spoken very highly of Calico Cupboard beforehand—my fiancé left with a very poor impression.
When we arrived home, the disappointment continued. The cinnamon rolls were dry, crumbly, and tasted stale, with frosting that was crusted over. Overall, the baked goods felt old and far below the quality I have always associated with your bakery. This is in stark contrast to the La Conner location, where staff consistently take extra care with guests and with packaging items meant to be taken home.
Given the service, presentation, and quality of the food, I am requesting a full refund for this purchase.
I am not writing to bash your business. I am writing because Calico Cupboard has been a favorite of mine for years, and it was genuinely upsetting to see one location fall so far below the standard set by the others. Mt. Vernon would benefit greatly from stronger leadership, clearer teamwork expectations, and staff who genuinely care about representing your business and your vision.
I hope this feedback reaches an owner or decision-maker who can address these concerns and help bring the Mt. Vernon location back to the level of excellence your brand is known for.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to your response.
Update:
Management did respond via email, however the response showed no accountability. My experience was dismissed entirely because the manager (*Norvel) stated he did not personally observe any issues that day. The quality concerns and service breakdown I described were denied. A $20 gift card was offered… however, my concern was never compensation, but brand standards and consistency. Unfortunately, the lack of openness to feedback was as disappointing as the original visit.
