For today’s ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure we tried out a new restaurant with an interesting name, “Mt Ascension Gastropub.”
Sadly, our experience began with a series of no’s. Firstly, there were no parking spots available in their minuscule parking lot, even though the restaurant wasn’t open yet.
Secondly, there was no one in the restaurant at all when we walked in. We didn’t know where to sit or where to order. I actually walked over to the attached coffee shop to see if they could shed any light on the situation.
Eventually our hostess showed up behind the counter and apologized for not being there for us when we came in. She advised us that we could just take a seat and that she would be happy to take our orders at our table. She promptly delivered our drinks, (water for Otto and Dr. Pepper for me), but sadly she didn’t provide straws, and I didn’t feel like asking for one.
Chelsea was our waitress and hostess and cashier. In fact, I had to ask her if she was also the cook because it appeared that she was the only employee working. She laughed and replied, “No, there’s a cook back there.”
We both ordered the “deluxe burger with all the trimmings” which, according to the menu included an Avalanche Ranch wagyu beef patty topped with lettuce, red onion, tomato, choice of cheese, and garlic aioli served on a brioche bun. However, she didn’t ask either of us which cheese we preferred. She also didn’t ask how we would like the burger cooked, which is a red flag. That could mean that the burgers are probably not cooked to order but are simply cooked ahead of time and thrown on the grill to warm them up.
The burgers were thin and probably hand-formed. However, mine was noticeably over-cooked. In fact, it left a charcoal flavor in my mouth. In my opinion, the difference between a good burger and a great burger is in the toppings. But even amazing toppings cannot transform a burnt burger into a good burger. To her credit, when Chelsea saw me sitting there with the bun open, analyzing the bottom of my burger, she asked if everything was ok. I mentioned that mine was overcooked and she explained that their cook was inexperienced. I believe that she would have gotten me a new burger if I had asked, but I have not found replacement burgers to be a satisfactory solution, so I said, “I’ll just eat it.” Having said that, they should never have sent that burger out for consumption. It was charred on the bottom.
The fries were nicely cooked, crispy outside and soft inside. However, even doused with ketchup, they were not to Otto’s liking and he left most of his fries on his plate.
This restaurant advertises how great the view is from their third floor terrace, but we ate on the first floor. When we had finished eating and had paid our bills,Chelsea recommended that we take the elevator to the third floor and check out the view. We did and the view is truly spectacular. It would be a fun place to hang out with friends, or to impress a date.
The Mt Ascension Gastropub has a really nice building and a fairly quiet environment with a cheerful, friendly staff, but sometimes you have to figure which items on the menu a restaurant does really well. They may have some other items that are amazing, but based on the quality of today’s burger I would have to try something else if I went back.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
They made my food and left it sitting downstairs until it was cold. Which I had to go get it. That’s odd. I had to get my own waters too. Also odd. That’s what we pay a tip for is for you to serve us the food and water. I just don’t get the set up there.
The service regarding getting me a new order was nice and very good.
