I have a special needs grandson, and on Saturday we celebrated his 9th birthday at this local pizza establishment with a small game room, a tradition we have maintained for several years now without incident. I must admit that I am not a regular patron of this establishment, primarily I don’t prefer their pizza.
However, Saturday’s experience was distinct. My husband and I arrived simultaneously with my grandson’s maternal grandfather and his wife. Upon attempting to place our order, we were informed that we could only purchase the buffet, as they had encountered issues with people ordering other menu items. For instance, I desired to order the hot wings, but I was required to purchase the buffet in addition to the wings. Given that it was my grandson’s special day, we opted for the buffet, and I simply removed the meat from the pizza as my meal.
Upon entering the restaurant, the same individual who had taken our order proceeded to inform us that the birthday party host had not paid for the “party room” but had been given it due to a prior cancellation. The party room itself was a confined, narrow, and enclosed space.
My youngest son arrived with a gift for my grandson and entered the room. He’s very health conscious and adherent to clean eating and exercising, he does not consume much if any fast food. As he was interacting with my grandson, the same lady abruptly appeared at the door of the “party room”, screaming and yelling at him to “Come out now and PAY for the buffet that he had the cashier up there crying because he didn’t pay for a buffet!” We were all taken aback by her screaming and yelling.
As he departed, kissing me and hugging his father and stepmother (who had traveled from Mississippi) goodbye, she continued to scream at him. My daughter and I proceeded to speak with management, and the young lady, Lani, who identified herself as the manager, emerged. She was kind and apologetic for the lady’s behavior, who had retreated to the back offices. I requested that she come out and apologize for her disrespectful behavior, but she failed to do so.
I expressed my dismay that, in 2025, a professional business would exhibit a demeanor reminiscent of 1968. As a nurse with 33 years of experience and Pastor, my son who is a travel/strike/ICU nurse, and my daughter, who holds a Doctorate of Ethical Leadership/ Educator, we were not attempting to steal pizza. We were simply maintaining my grandson’s birthday ritual, as he has autism and thrives on routine. However, as of yesterday, that ritual has changed.
People we must do better because God is not pleased and neither am I. It took me several hours to recollect my composure in fervent and deep prayer! If you know me, I love everyone regardless of ethnicity, education, or any preconceived statistically barriers! Satan will not WIN! My prayer is that we all come to Jesus with repentance. I am sorry that to enter an establishment you have to order their buffet. I did not notice the sign until we were leaving. I overlooked that as we have eagerly celebrated Nehemiah’s birthday there for the last 4 years or more without this happening. I have ordered it in the past and opt for other menu options. But to be screamed at and demeaned is not acceptable .
