Before we even placed our order, we were served a warm lentil soup, essentially dal, which we believe was complimentary. It was a small but thoughtful touch and immediately set the mood for the meal. Comforting, homely, and very welcoming.
We went in wanting to explore Nepalese cuisine beyond the usual and were initially considering thukpa. Instead, we ordered the Jhol Momos, which turned out to be the highlight of the meal. These were vegetable momos served in a thick, korma-style gravy that was rich, comforting, and deeply flavorful. It is a complete meal in itself and unlike anything we have tasted before.
For appetizers, we tried the Chicken Sekuwa, one of the restaurant’s bestsellers. It is a Nepalese-style grilled chicken dish, somewhat reminiscent of chicken tikka but with its own distinct flavour. Smoky, well spiced, and beautifully cooked. We also ordered the Indo-Chinese Paneer Chilli, which was surprisingly good, with crispy paneer, balanced heat, and not overly saucy.
Overall, Mount Everest may not impress with flashy décor, but if you are looking for authentic Nepalese flavours, comforting food, and something a little different, this place absolutely delivers. We will definitely be back to explore more of the menu.
Photos uploaded of the dishes we ordered, along with the exterior of the restaurant to help you spot it easily from the street.
I opted for the chicken biryani, and the quality of the ingredients was quite nice. The rice grains were long, perfectly separable, and the chicken was tender and well-cooked. It was also served super hot! Oddly, there was a noticeable temperature difference between the rice and the chicken, and I actually ended up burning my mouth on the chicken.
Flavor-wise, I felt the biryani leaned heavily on the cumin, which isn’t my personal preference, and I’m not sure if that’s typical of a Nepalese style. While the quality was good, the overall spice profile wasn’t quite what I was hoping for. It’s a place worth trying, but maybe some flavors are an acquired taste!
Had the Thali Lamb ($18.99) and Thali Chicken ($18.20). These are big metal plates with their special curry and comes with lentils, rice, naan, veggie pakora, and dessert (rice pudding I think).
The specials also came with a bowl of hot and creamy cauliflower soup which was one of the best things here. Also liked the crispy pakoras.
In addition to a creamy Mango Milk Shake ($6.30), we got an order of Steamed Vegetarian Momos ($14.99).
Service was a bit off as it took quite a long while for someone in our table to get their meal and we had to flag someone down about it.
Both times I gad to walk towards the register to get the check. Paid cash. After lunch, They failed to give back the correct change. I went to the register and three of them were not able to figure it out, despite my saying “you need to take this quarter and give me a loonies.” Finally a fourth person came by and was able to subtract $32 from $50. We even had enough food left over for a snack later.
