I had the most amazing experience at Motherland Kitchen today! The food was absolutely bursting with flavor — every bite tasted fresh, intentional, and made with love. You can truly tell this is authentic Afro-Caribbean cuisine prepared with heart.
We had the honor of being the very first people to try their new Cow Pea Leaves Spinach Pumpkin Stew, and it was phenomenal. Rich, comforting, and perfectly seasoned — the layers of flavor were incredible. It was hearty, nourishing, and completely satisfying.
The owner, Sabina, was outstanding. She didn’t just serve us food — she shared knowledge. She took the time to teach us about the vegetables she uses and the power of a plant-based, vegan diet. Her passion for health, culture, and community shines through in everything she does.
If you’re looking for bold flavors, authentic Afro-Caribbean dishes, and a welcoming atmosphere, Motherland Kitchen is a must-visit. I will absolutely be back!

Had dinner here (downtown Hagerstown) last night to celebrate a friends’ birthday. Options for the meat eaters and the vegans. Had the restaurant to ourselves and they stayed open late to accommodate our late arrival. Jollof rice was deeeelicious. I also had the vegan meat pie. And we shared plantains. Everyone was pleased! Beautiful art hanging by the door. Parked at parking garage a few blocks away $2 per hour.

Motherland’s food has fantastic flavor, had the jollof rice, jerk chicken, and salmon patty. The patty was a little hard but delicious. Lots of little bone pieces in the chicken that were a little much to avoid eating, but man the flavor of their food overpowers any “downsides”. So good.

Motherland Kitchen & Catering was so much fun. The food was delicious, the portions are generous (come hungry!).
Worked beautifully for both a vegan and an omnivore. We both left genuinely happy with our meals.
If you’re having one of those “I need a real meal” days, this is the place. Big flavors, satisfying plates, and a fun vibe. We’ll definitely be back.

Me and my family loved the food! Everything was fresh and packed with flavor. The portions were generous—more than enough to feed all three of us. The beef was tender and juicy, the sweet plantains were cooked perfectly, and the jollof rice was amazing. We’ve already decided we’ll be going back for more!
The staff were welcoming, informative, and kind, and the restaurant itself was clean with beautiful décor on the walls. I highly recommend Motherland Kitchen and Catering!

Absolutely wonderful experience! The food is delicious and heartening and the service is warm and friendly. It was our first experience with West African cuisine and we’re coming back for more. It was clear just how much love and care went into preparing the meals. We were made to feel so welcome and our questions about the menu were answered with so much information.
I’m happy to recommend this place without any qualifications, go as soon as you can!

I tried the Chicken Peanut Butter Stew that sounds intriguingly delicious! I’ve never thought to combine those ingredients in a stew. The rich, creamy texture of the peanut butter melded beautifully with the tender chicken, creating a dish that was both comforting and exotic. The spices added a warm kick. Each bite was a delightful surprise, and I found myself going back for seconds. This unexpected combination has definitely opened my eyes to new possibilities in cooking!I’ve never thought to combine those ingredients in a stew.

The food here is the real star. Absolute comfort food with rich sauces and spices that hit the spot. The portions are so generous – when we ordered the vegan veggie patty, we thought we were going to get a tiny empanada or pouch, but this thing practically filled the plate! We had the shrimp cauliflower pilaf, the blacked fish stew, and the chicken bitterleaf with peanut sauce. The chicken was so much delicious food we had to take half home for another meal! So many flavors remind me of back home in New Orleans which makes sense because so much New Orleans cuisine owes a debt to Africa & the Caribbean. We will definitely be back – thanks!!
