Mosca’s – Westwego, LA | Review & What to Eat – Road Food

Mosca is a veritable festival of garlic, along with olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and breadcrumbs all cosseting little nuggets of sweet oyster meat.

We were a party of 11 there to celebrate my birthday this past Saturday. I know many restaurants would flinch at a larger party, but Mosca’s has been a family favorite since I was a baby. I knew I only wanted to spend my birthday there—and our server, Shannon, was simply the best. She was welcoming, attentive (and it was BUSY that night, with at least 3 other larger parties), and tackled our theatrical crew with so much patience and good humor. The food was (as always) on another level, especially the oysters Mosca. I could not have asked for a better birthday. Please go give these guys a try and ask for Shannon, who should be given so much more than a slice of birthday cake and a round of applause. 10/10 no notes.

I visited Mosca’s Restaurant for the first time with a large family group. The food was absolutely excellent—each dishes were full of flavor and perfectly prepared. I especially liked the Oysters Mosca. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure our group was well taken care of throughout the evening. It was a wonderful experience.
The atmosphere is fun, though. There were large groups, and everyone was having a great time. The staff was excellent and they all worked well together.
Make sure you make reservations and bring cash since this place is a cash only

Moscas has always been one of my favorite restaurants. My family has been going there as far back as I can remember. We were a party of 10, the food and service was excellent. The crab salad is to die for. I would recommend Moscas to any and everybody looking for a delicious home cooked Italian meal made with love.

Good restaurant but kind of a novelty. Food was good, not great but thats not to say dont go if you haven’t been, go to experience it at least once. We will probably not go back but our experience was fair.

My brother and I we’re in New Orleans for a few days, and I saw this place on a food show, so i made reservations.

It was just us two, but this place is definitely designed for large groups.

The main reason for 3 stars is the food. We ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and shrimp mosca.

The spaghetti was pretty salty… it’s not that it tasted bad or anything. It was fine tasting, but it wasn’t the wow I was hoping for.

The shrimp mosca was pretty good, but for the price, it wasn’t anything spectacular.

We were both disappointed in the bread that came out. It is kind of heavy and plain. Although it would be better if they provided olive oil for dipping the bread in… then you could sprinkle salt, pepper and parmesan cheese in the olive oil… then the bread would be taken to another level.

The atmosphere is fun, though. There were large groups, and everyone was having a great time. The staff was excellent and they all worked well together.

This is a cash only establishment, which we knew, but if you’ve got a large group, make sure everyone knows it’s cash only. I do believe they have an ATM on site, but it would be smart to check ahead of time.

Now, my brother and I don’t drink alcohol, so our take on this place this is that they served a lot of alcohol. Which could explain why the food was salty, because if people are getting drunk, they need that extra pop of salt or flavor to enjoy the food.

I think if you’re going in a large group, drinking a lot, and want a celebration spot, then this place is great for that.

If you’re looking for a quiet, great Italian restaurant but don’t drink, then I wouldn’t recommend this place.

I also believe it’s worth trying once to see if you like it, because the staff is great as they excel at serving large groups.

We’re from Minnesota, so we won’t be coming back, but if we had a large group I’d probably try it again, to see if I have a different experience.

Otherwise… thank you to Moscas and how they took care of us.

This is a classic, no frills, Mob-style Italian joint. The menu is simple as everything is served family style, and the best is the chicken a la grande! Great service and atmosphere. Make sure to make reservations early and bring cash. Can’t wait to go back for the holidays!

I visited Mosca’s Restaurant for the first time with a large family group, many of whom have been coming here for decades. I can see why they love it! The food was absolutely excellent—each dishes were full of flavor and perfectly prepared. I especially liked the Oysters Mosca. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure our group was well taken care of throughout the evening. It was a wonderful experience, and I’m already looking forward to the next time. Highly recommend!

It doesn’t matter that you have to drive 20 mi outside of downtown New Orleans to get to this place, just freaking go! I would drive a hundred miles to get… No, scrap that… I would drive 500 miles to be able to have this experience again.
The service is incredible, the weight or the food to be prepared may seem long, but when you know that your meal is being prepared especially for you, time doesn’t matter.
If you need video proof, go watch season 1 of somebody feed Phil and check out the Mosca’s segment. It’s not only that good, but better in real time.
By the way, it’s cash only, but there’s an ATM machine inside I believe.

We called the Wednesday before to reserve what was the last available time-slot on the following Saturday night. They called us back the night before our reservation to confirm (Nice). It resulted in a late dinner, ~9:30, but every bit of the experience was worth the wait! Our party of 4 (a 5th backed out at the last minute) really enjoyed sharing spaghetti Bordelaise, oysters Mosca, spaghetti & meatballs, sausage Johnny and chicken Cacciatore with the house bread and a bottle of Moscato. Everything was so delicious and we all agreed that the Italian sausage and potatoes were the best we’d ever had. Kind of a hike from NOLA/French Quarter, but very much worth the small effort. We were all very pleased with our experience!

I don’t get it.
Oyster Mosca was good, but that was it.
The meatballs didn’t have great flavor, and although the pasta was delicious, there is nothing special about it or the sauce.
The sausage and potato was just outright bad. Chicken Cacciatore was a lot of bones for some chicken of mediocre flavor.
I get that it’s a funky little place outside of the city, but I would advise anyone from going out of their way to make the trip here. $500 later felt like a serious rip off for the quality of food and wine.
