I highly recommend packing some msemen and croissants . We ended up running to Zyara for a wrap because, let’s be honest, we were still hungry.
The decor is stunning, though. You start with dates and shebakia—admittedly, the shebakia was good. Then it’s a piece of msemen so small. The fruit salad? Just a shy little scoop hiding at the bottom of the cup. The Moroccan salad is a spoonful of each: carrot, barba, and mashed potato, served with a side of “Is that it?” And let’s not forget the egg and a tiny bowl of harira—tasty, but I only liked it because I was starving.
Now, about that Moroccan cigar… whatever they stuffed in there, I’m convinced it was a secret experiment gone wrong. We decided to go for the Royal option because the basic $24.95 was clearly a suggestion, not a meal. We ordered kebab tagine and merna balls, and what a letdown! Tasteless enough to make cardboard seem gourmet. It was a waste of precious stomach space.
On the bright side, the service was great, and the presentation was decent. But overall, the value for the meal $34.95? Was Below average. I even saw a few folks at Tangiawi ordering food because they clearly regretted their “bites” decision. If you’re planning to dine here, just remember: pack snacks.. u will need them !
We went on a Friday night, the only day they serve vegetarian options. Veggie cous cous was good.
They are opening another spot on Steinway close to 30th ave supposedly at the end of this month.
Came in for a take-out order 40mins before iftar. They said it would take 25mins but took 50mins instead (food arrived 10mins after iftar). Now I must emphasize that I have no issues with waiting, especially in Ramadhan, delays are understandable. What I have an issue with is what did NOT happen during our wait.
They offered dates and other items to break your fast to only dine-in customers. They looked straight at us waiting for our food and decided to ignore us while walking in front of us with a platter filled with dates. We had to go outside to buy drinks to break our fasts due to this. So apparently the generosity for breaking your fast with even a date only extends to dine-in customers? Very hurtful to think we aren’t deserving of dates due to a take-out order and even more disrespectful doing this when they ran 25mins late for our food with iftar time falling in between.
Lastly, the food was unique, but mid. Maybe I just don’t have a palate for Moroccan style food so definitely take this part of the review with a grain of salt. Just have no clue how it’s a 4.9 rated restaurant, tastes more like a 4.4. And given their nonexistent customer service, where they didn’t even acknowledge us for iftar or to tell us our food is running late even once, would think the rating would be even lower.
As far as the food, my rating is as follows:
Lamb shank – 4/5.
The Beef with peas – 1/5 (mute flavor).
The half chicken – 3/5.
The bread 4/5, really enjoyed their bread.
Seafood pastilla – 4/5
