Tucked in the Main Street plaza in Alhambra (right next to the Edwards theater), **Monty’s Good Burger** has expanded beyond burgers with a killer **chicken and waffles** that’s become my new weekend ritual . The spot keeps that signature Monty’s vibe—bright retro signage, vegan-friendly roots, but now with this crispy fried chicken upgrade that’s 100% plant-based yet scarily convincing. The **convenient location** makes it an easy stop after movies, shopping, or just cruising the SGV—plenty of parking in the lot, too.
Ordered the **chicken and waffles**, and the chicken was **perfectly cooked**—shatteringly crunchy exterior, juicy and tender inside with that signature Monty’s seasoning that somehow tastes like real fried chicken. It sits atop a massive, golden waffle that’s thick and fluffy with nice crisp edges. Drizzled with maple syrup and served with a side of hot sauce—comfort food heaven.
**Service was friendly** and classic fast-casual: order at the counter, staff with big smiles and quick recommendations, food out in under 10 minutes even when busy. Outdoor seating is great for people-watching on Main St.
Only docking 0.3 because, while delicious, it doesn’t quite reach **fine-dining quality**. The **seasoning** is tasty but straightforward (could use a touch more complexity or heat), the **waffle mix** is solid but not the ultra-buttery, yeasted perfection of higher-end spots, and the **syrup** is standard maple rather than something house-infused or premium.
Still, Monty’s chicken and waffles are easily one of the best fast-casual versions in the area—crispy, satisfying, and shockingly good for plant-based. At this consistency and convenience, it’s a strong 4.7. I’m already craving my next plate. Alhambra, you’re lucky to have this location.
The owner is really cool. Definitely will continue to support
Had Monty’s on my list for a few months and finally decided to give a try when my wife was craving Chicken & Waffles!
Service was great, very welcoming and took time to talk about their Cheesesteak best sellers and give us recommendations based on our tastes. Even came out after we had been served our food to check on us and offer extra toppings, I got some pickles which paired well with the poblano cheesesteak!
Cheesesteak was perfectly hot off the grill, bread was soft and every bite was juicy. Adding pickle slices a little hot sauce (stole from my wife’s chicken & waffles but I’m sure I could have asked for some at no charge) was the perfect touch.
The chicken was crispy on the outside and meat still juicy. The waffles wasn’t as crispy as my liking but it had good flavor and a dense softness that pair nicely with the chicken.
When I got there, the owners took their time to go over the menu with me. I ended up ordering the fried chicken and waffle. The chicken was juicy, well-seasoned, and crispy. The waffle was delicious and had a mochi-like chew that made it stand out. I also tried their G-moe hot sandwich and potato salad. The sandwich was flavorful but the sauce was a bit heavy-handed for my taste, so I’d give it a 4 out of 5. The potato salad was solid and a nice side.
I’m definitely coming back to try their chopped cheese and cold sandwiches next time.
Parking is a small lot in a strip mall, so it might get tight during peak hours, but I didn’t have trouble finding a spot.
Monty’s is an awesome spot that feels very homey. The owners clearly care about their food and their customers. Great addition to Alhambra.
The drumstick was pretty decent, but that chicken breast was so dry I struggled to get through it. The staff was super nice though – they even gave us free cookies! Sweet gesture, but honestly, probably not enough to bring me back for another visit. Such a shame because I was really looking forward to it!
