We visited for our anniversary, and I will say the atmosphere is romantic. The dining area is dimly lit, and the live band adds a nice touch, especially with the lead singer engaging with guests. Service was top-notch from both the hostess and the waiter.
However, there were a few issues. They couldn’t locate my reservation booked through Resy, though luckily it wasn’t too busy. The dry-aged NY strip was tender but lacked flavor inside. The sea bass was bland as well, including the noodles and veggies. The tuna poke was also a disappointment.
I highly recommend other steakhouses like Steak 48 if you’re looking for a true premium experience. But if you want something local and convenient, this spot could work. When you’re paying premium steakhouse prices, the food needs to shine just as much as the ambiance and that’s where Monterey Grill still has room to grow.
Our entrées were tasty and well prepared, and we truly enjoyed most of the food. The only downside for us was the meatball appetizer—it just didn’t hit the mark compared to everything else we had.
That said, great service, solid food, and excellent drinks made for an enjoyable night out. We’d definitely come back and try more from the menu.
We’re one and done here. There are just too many other restaurants to try.
One I will say….always go experience for yourself because your experience may be different from others. For example, I didn’t care for the Sunday brunch but I’d definitely come back for the every day menu items
The wine selection not extensive, but adequate
The food was top notch. We ordered the Calamari – it was excellent – more of an asian flare than the traditional italian presentation. My wife ordered the crab cakes – again excellent – jumbo lump crab meat and very little filler. I had the rib-eye and ordered it MR Pittsburgh style. The steak itself was cooked correctly and very tender, however, it was not as crispy as I am accustomed to for Pittsburgh style. We finished off with the 3 layer chocolate cake – outstanding – kudos to the pastry chef.
The service was also outstanding – Glenn was the epitome of what a server should be – attentive, but not over bearing, knowledgeable, approachable and engaging. I will request him on our next visit.
Our waiter was good. He was polite and friendly. Expected a little bit more engaging given the environment and restaurant.
Our fillet and ribeye were undercooked. I started to cut into mine and asked my partner to cut into hers to check that it was cooked properly while the waiter was there and he just walked away. I feel like that should be a staple at any steakhouse. Cut into your steak as soon as it is served to make sure the steak is cooked to the temperature you ordered. We ordered ordered, medium rare. We were given rare/blue.
Lobster mac & cheese was just OK. It was bland and the tiniest bit of lobster on top.
Truffle fries were good
Overall, I feel like we were rushed out of there. I feel like steaks could’ve been seasoned and cooked better. Our waiter was nice, but if I’m spending $310 there I would expect better.
The valet was awesome. I feel like he was the best part as well as the hostess that brought us to our table.
Last thing the bathrooms were disgusting. Urine, water and hand towels all over the floor. At 7:30 at night, the trash was overflowing. This was in the men’s and women’s bathrooms. The door into the men’s room was sticky.
I really would like to give this place another shot, but I don’t think I can bring myself too after spending over $300 with tip.
I understand it was New Year’s Eve, but steaks were not cooked properly and to our liking. Service could be better. No one thanking you for coming after leaving when five people were just standing there. Lastly the bathrooms if you can’t get a bathroom clean, what is the kitchen look like?
