My tattoo artist actually recommended Momotaro Sushi to me, saying it was the go-to spot if I wanted that classic “hole-in-the-wall” sushi experience and that’s exactly what it felt like.

My friend and I were out shopping in Carytown and figured we’d check it out. We stopped in around 2 PM on a Thursday and were the only customers there, which made us wonder for a second if they were even open. But the one gentleman inside (possibly the owner?) quickly greeted us and assured us they were, in fact, open. He was incredibly sweet, and the service was genuinely great despite us being the only ones there.

The atmosphere was definitely on the quieter, more low-key side—maybe even a little awkward at first with how empty it was—but once we settled in, it had a charming, humble vibe.

As for the sushi: it was good, not mind-blowing, but definitely solid. A few of the rolls tasted slightly off—hard to explain, maybe something with the rice? It wasn’t anything that ruined the meal, just something we noticed. That said, for the price and portion size, it’s a great option, especially if you’re in the area looking for a quick and casual lunch.

Overall, if you’re not expecting a pristine, high-end sushi bar and just want good sushi in a cozy, unpretentious setting, I’d recommend giving Momotaro a try.

finally got to try this place as i live near by and somehow every time i passed by momotaro it was monday or tuesday and they’re closed on both of those days? so i came in and ordered two pieces of salmon nigiri and they were ok, but shaped weirdly and the rice fell apart sooo easily when trying to dip it in soy sauce. the fish was falling apart at the sinews also :/. and i had a gray piece of ginger? i then ordered the momotaro roll, and on the menu it was described to be a spicy california roll with tempura crunches, signature sauce, and eel sauce, but there was AMERICAN CHEESE on it????? i was very confused because it wasn’t marked on the menu, and also who puts that on sushi?? the roll itself was made very poorly, presentation was not there, and also did not get any wasabi on that plate for whatever reason. this is my first review ever and i wanted to make it to warn people if they want to come here. the best part about this restaurant is that there is an aquarium inside lol.

Hidden gem on the edge of Carytown!
I was reluctant to try this place because of the lower rating when I initially saw it but I’m glad I dove into the reviews. Really cool vibe inside and the sushi was really good! My favorite roll was the pepper tuna roll. It had a nice kick to it. Also the ginger dressing on the salad was great!

Daughter and I love to try new sushi restaurants. We wanted to go down to Cary Street on a Saturday night to be able to walk around and check out some of the other stores. We had never been to Momotaro, so we thought we would give it a try. We were a tad worried since it was like 7pm on a Saturday night and we were the only people in the place and only ones the whole time we were there. We did see quite a bit of to go orders to go though. We ordered a Eel Dragon roll, eel roll, spicy tuna and tempura shrimp roll. The gentleman that waited on us was super nice and quick to help us out. Our order didn’t take overly long to get made why we’re waiting though they have a pretty cool saltwater fish tank setup for my daughter and I watch the fish for a while which was kind of fun. The decor is pretty cool, not a very large place maybe 10 tables or so and they had 1 table set up out on the sidewalk. Both my daughter and I thought the sushi was really good. I thought the quality was pretty top-notch and the size of the rules we’re pretty filling. Don’t know if it was a fluke and just a time and when we went with no one there but this place should definitely be much busier. When we venture back down to Cary Street again for sushi, I’m sure we would be stopping in.

I used to live across the street for years and now my husband and I visit for lunch or special occasions. It’s always a pleasure to dine here. I personally love to vibe on sake and an appetizer while I wait for my order. The past two times we ordered the owner put it on a boat and it brought me so much joy. The new mural is so cool too. You must try this place if you want an intimate and cozy date! Or even just a lunch that hits the spot!

Great sushi! Fresh tasting and stimulating flavors! The plating presentation was very good as well. The eatery is a very charming place on West Cary Street. I loved the flying dragon artwork too!

Nice place to enjoy sushi and do a little people watching out the large picture window.

We enjoyed a california roll and a couple classic rolls.

We got there right before closing and were the only ones there and yet felt welcomed and got great service and perfectly prepared edamame and fresh avocado roll , cucumber roll and delicious Danielle roll which has seaweed salad and something crunchy on the roll.

When you leave the Byrd theater hungry and most of Carytown restaurants dark, we appreciated the 9:30pm close and no hesitation to have us eat in.

My husband and I discovered Momotaro while walking around Carytown, and we decided to try it a couple of weeks ago. He’s from NYC, so he’s had a lot of good Japanese food over the years.

We tried the miso soup first, and we immediately knew we’d found a gem of a place. Next we tried their Angie roll and Double Rainbow roll – perfection. The shumai was literally the best we’ve ever had. We also got a pot of hot green tea, which normally I’m not a fan of. Theirs was SO good we finished the whole pot together. We ordered shrimp hibachi next, and it was just as delicious as everything else. We had strawberry mochi with ice cream for dessert (honestly the best mochi I’ve had).

Service was great – prompt and polite. The chef came out to check on everything a few times and he was super polite and grateful.

We both agree this is one of our new favorite restaurants we’ve ever eaten at. We went back again tonight and ordered the miso soup, Angie roll, shumai, green tea, and mochi ice cream again, and tried their shrimp curry bowl. Of course we loved that too! I can’t recommend Momotaro enough!!

Ordered via GrubHub:

Got two simple spicy rolls ($6.50 each) and a Kani salad ($7.50).

Did not get what I paid for, and the taste isn’t lacking, it is just missing. Rice tasted funky, and no flavors in the tuna/salmon. The spicy wasn’t even there. The salad was mainly a leaf of lettuce with very little fake crab meat as it was. It was flavorful, but wasn’t much so definitely a loss on almost $30. I did save $3 since it was my first, and last, time ordering from this restaurant.
